Given that we were a 6 win laughing-stock team at the end of last year, brought in a rookie head coach who is doubling as an OC, and a rookie DC, I think we're doing pretty well to make every game but 2 (Tennessee and Baltimore) competitive. I'm even happier that we won 7 of the 12.
Consider that Gase's offense runs through his TE's, and we've been using our 3rd and 4th stringers much of the season. Realize that Joseph's ideal defense is a 3-4 and he was relying heavily on a 4-3 DL to bail out his abysmal LB corps and scheme to protect his nascent DB's. Both of these guys are learning what our personnel can and cannot do. The team is adjusting to new concepts with sporadic results. Yes, Suh, Wake, Kiko, and Reshad proved they are studs. But Mario Williams has been a bust. Byron Maxwell appears to be having more hot than cold days, but one day we get the Hulk, another we get Bruce Banner. Xavien Howard is still injured and Tony Lippett is still learning. Brice McCain is giving it his best, but sometimes that's not enough. The loss of Reshad Jones is big, but VJ has made a good addition with Bacarri Rambo. But, any team starting Spencer Paysinger, Neville Hewitt, Earl Mitchell and Andre Branch ... is going to have issues.
On offense, we've seen that when our OL is right, this team is good enough. But, our lack of a stud TE really shows. Ditto for the right side of our line.
We are a work in progress. Like russianbear explained, I'm just happy we're competitive in 10 of our 12 games with a chance to win it. Sure, I'd love us to blow teams out. Sure, I'd love to see us hanging 40-burgers on teams. But at the end of the day, a win is a win, and I'm most interested in winning.
