It allows Saban to evalute them and not have to commit long term to players he may not want after this season.

Why? Do you want to be stuck with a lot of players that might suck? This way we can see who can contribute to the team and who can't.

But if they do perform well, they might wanna ask for bigger bucks so that'll be a gamble too to try to keep good players.

It is a good idea in case they don't perform. However, I agree it could cause problems resigning them if they play well.
