I don't believe the Dolphins Organization will retire Zach Thomas number or for that matter Jason Taylor's number either.
Blashphemy ? :err:
:shakeno:
Only 3 numbers have been retired in the history of the Dolphins, Bob Griese (SuperBowl QB) #12, Hall of Famer, Dan Marino (SuperBowl QB Hall of Famer NFL Record Holder) #13, Larry Csonka (SuperBowl MVP Hall of Famer) #39.
Now after Larry Csonka left in 1974 for the World Football Leauge he did come back in 1979 played 1 season with the Dolphins and retired as a Dolphin. All three retired as Dolphins all three are in the Hall of Fame.
Zach Thomas was released, waived, cut whatever you want to call it, and he did not play in a Super Bowl and based on his Miami Dolphins tenure will not sniff the Hall of Fame. If Jason Taylor is traded he will be in the same boat as Zach.
Players don't get numbers retired because they were fan favorites or because they had sexy stats. Players get numbers retired because they were so extraordinary that no other player could possibly were that number. Look around the NFL at retired numbers:

When you study the list you realize the Dolphins take retiring numbers very seriously while other teams have retired legions of numbers.
The Tennesse Titans have #34 retired because of Earl Campbell. But Earl never played for the Titans and the Titans fled Houston and changed everything about the franchise. The Housten Texans in Housten have zero number retired.
I am confused. I have spent 1 hour writing this post.
So you may or may not see #54 running around in the future.
NOW IM DONE :beer1:
