OTA Notes From Today

Matt Roth @ LB... Worth a Shot!

I guess that means Merling is gonna be our new starting DE!

I guess they are trying to find a position for Roth after all,

Well this should be interesting, is this the beginning of the end for Roth in Miami?
I don't think so. Roth is more of an edge rusher. Everyone seems to try to use him as a DE in a 3-4, but he's not really a run stopper. I think his best fit in a 3-4 is as an OLB.

Also, did anyone else notice where Sparano pretty much admitted that we're using a 3-4 in his interview?

I think Roth is to slow to play LB, inside or out.

watch the practice highlights video on the page of the dolphins..
there are 2 interesting parts in it..
at 2:52 lehan drops an INT in a drill..looks like he did not concentrate..had the ball in his hands and then dropped it..
and at 4:35 a coach is really angry with randy starks..he lined up as a DE as they where practicing the first step or something like that and starks was very slow coming off the snap..didn't look very motivated, hope that changes soon..

and btw i hope that the lehan injury is not very serious..but with our luck i think that he will be out for season..that would be a huge blow for our secondary..

with his karate/boxing skills & "some" weight loss (to up speed), this is where Roth should be (ala Vrabel/Thomas in NE).

Some interesting notes from today.

1. Shawn Murphy is working with the first team at LG.

2. Soliai, Goodman and Fasano are all back practicing(they will injured before).

3. McKinney is not working out.

4. Matt Roth is working out as a LINEBACKER.

I said a few weeks ago here that the new regime should slim Roth back down to where he was as a senior at Iowa and then play him at OLB. Coming out of Iowa he fit a Joey Porter role a helluva lot better than a DE role, but Saban et al. wanted him chunked up and at DT/DE. He simply doesn't have the arm length and arsenal of moves to be effective there. But his high motor and reckless abandon would work well if he was leaned out and put at OLB.
