Why do we suck at blitzing the opposing QB? We seem to get more pressure on opposing QB's when we use a simple 4-3 scheme. Are our LB's too small to blitz? or are we blitzing at the wrong time?

We dont. 10 of our 24 sacks come from non-linemen(Good for 4th in the league). That's good with bad defensive backs.

We rarely use a simple 4-3 scheme.

No.

From some of the quotes I've read from Falcons players and "experts" in the media, our LB's and DB's show the blitz too soon. Teams make the adjustments and pick them up because they can see them coming.

At least so I've read...

i think we have blitzed so much that we'll get there sometimes, but all in all it hasn't been that effective... our 3rd down blitzing seems to ALWAYS get beat...

yes our LBs and Safeties have a lot of sacks, but its cause we blitz so damn much... but the overall percentage of the times we get to the QB is probably low...

I've read this and heard this too, but has it ever occurred to the all-knowing media that maybe we want the opposing QB to feel pre-snap pressure?

Sometimes I think we blitz too much....I'd like to see the linebackers split out more once and awhile to cover slant area's....it seems to be the play of choice of teams we play against....and it seems to beat our coverage more than not. Watching the Dolphins on defense...you always know where the linebackers are....the three of them are in tight between the tackles....and just can't slide to the open area's soon enough to help with short passes.

Pressure only works if you can produce something more than a head fake.

Because they lack speed.

the problem of speed can be lessen by better positioning. Crowder seems to have enough speed....and Zack is Zack.

It was stated in the last game that we give away all of our blitz. I think there is some truth to that and that is the reason we have so many off sides penelties. Our timing is off. I don't know how many times I have seen us give a blitz away the qb steps back changes the play and beats us. I think we need to disguise our blitz better.

We lost creativity. We don't see those linebackers pull away at the last min. into coverage so much. They always seem to fill the same gaps, get blocked by the same backs, and leave the middle of the field open for 1-1 coverage. (Very suspect to an off. pick route). Blitzing less would be good, but that doesn't mean that we can't show blitz on 75% of the downs. And Ive said it all along, why can't we seem to mix things up with a CB blitz like once a game? And with all of our guys meeting resistance at the line, why are we the only team that can't seem to get our hands up in the air and bat down a pass or two. And why....I better stop there.

our blitzing has been good the past too games, this isn't the problem. the problem is that opposing WRs get open too quick for us to get the QB. the secoundary needs to be addressed this offseason and will be

you have to blitz when your corners and safeties cant cover. Phins secondary is the weakest part of the team. Rolled the dice when we got rid of Surtain; crapped out when Poole went down shortly thereafter. If Phins just dropped into coverage, every qb in the league would eat this secondary for lunch.

You DO have to blitz. Whats even more important is that you need to be effective. The secondary (as bad as they can be) has actually been holding their own for as much pressure that gets thrust upon them.

coverage not there

The Blitz is most effective when combined with press man coverage. The goal of the Blitz is NOT to just sack the QB but to pressure and throw off the timing of the play, force the check down, and prevent 3rd down conversions.

In order to be a successful Blitz team you need physical corners like we used to have i.e Surtain and Madison (5 years ago).

JJ defense was predicated on stoutness in the middle of the line of scrimmage, speed edge rushers, physical press coverage on the corners, speed at LB to cover backs and TE's, and physical safties to lend run support.

It worked because of the personnel.

Our current scheme does not lend to successful Blitzing on the frequency we use it because we don;t have the CB's that can physically match up with WR's.

Our personnel is better suited to pay 5-10yds off the ball, dropping into Zones, and coming up to make plays. That's it.
