I normally read a lot more then I post, but I had to comment on what exactly prompted such a solid performance by our O-Line last Saturday.

LT - McIntosh
LG - Jeno James
Center - McKinney
RG - Hadnot
RT - Vernon Carey

That lineup performed excellent, I remembered thinking to myself, on the opening drive, that "oh yea, we're back baby" - errrr or something along those lines.

Now, what exactly was the "X-Factor" that caused such a drastic (over-night) change?

What I found VERY interesting was how Houck made Vernon run the gauntlet by practicing with JT, then switched him over to RT - and BAM, a huge impact. Normally, D-Lines have their best DE over at the right side - thus, Vernon could be expected to go up against lesser talent. IMO that was a great coaching move. Aside from training Vernon at the LT spot, Houck managed to "light a fire" under McIntosh's *** - perhaps he had this move planned all along?

*Notice the considerable drop-off when McLazy stepped in at RT... what a disappointment.

McKinney was another surprise for me, but I could not really notice him throughout the game. Was it that he was playing extremely well, or was he being helped by a guard all the time?

I wanted to also point out that Tampa Bay was a good test... again, they were 5th last year if I recall correctly... I was very encouraged... and that performance, if they can do it with consistency, bodes extremely well for our season dolfans!

Yeah, at the very least, Saturday's game offers up some hope that our QBs may have time to throw every now and then, and that our RBs won't be hitting brick walls all the time.

I think the bottom line is these guys will get better w/ each game played. I'm not expecting anything in the order of what the Cowboys had in the early 90s, but some consistency could go along way this season!

I thought that I was watching a game on ESPN Classic for a while. Hopefully the boys up front can perform like that on a consistent basis.

I'll guess that's why Hudson Houck is considered the best OL coach in the business.

Good post. You should post more often. It's refreshing to find Dolphins fans that understand what really matters (OL), versus those who for whatever reason want to spend all day long talking about QB. I watched every minute of every miserable game last year and I can promise you that Peyton Manning would have had a QB rating of under 50 behind that OL.

I don't think it was any great plan to "light a fire" under McIntosh but that McDougle sucks so much more at RT than McI at LT.

Like the right side of the line and think this should be solid the next few years with Carey & Hadnot. Now we only need a C, LT, and possibly LG if James continues to be average with the money we're paying him.

unless you have an oline that is one of the best in the league, typically one side is your go-to side and the other is just servicable. Now if we have to get a couple of yards on a 3rd down we can just run behind the right side.

If this continues, I will be very excited for this season.

I still wish McDougle would step up and play better. That would allow us to put Carey at guard and Hadnot at center.

Very nice post! Welcome to the forum. Thank you for not starting off with a thread like "Trade Zach for Rich Gannon"

Exactly. How some of the mindless posts here end up with 100 or more comments is beyond me! VERY good post, especially for a first try! :)

Good post. However I dont think this was Hudson's plan. I think McDougle was just playing poor and therefore the adjustment had to be made.

A year at RT would greatly help Vernon because it would get his confidence up. After playing against JT, Im very confident Vernon can hold down the RT spot for years to come. Carey and Hadnot are a very young duo on the right side, it was great to see the right side of our line play that well together. Hopefully we can see them for the next 5-8 years as the starting right side of our Oline.

While you make some good points, I still have one problem with HH and Saban and the way they are forming the OL...

The problem I have is that since the May minicamps, they have been moving guys around and shuffling the lineup so much, that they cannot possibly develop any continuity, which is a major necessity to a successful OL...These guys have to work together, consistently sometime soon...

So, Nictator, HH....when will you name an offensive line lineup ???

Thanks guys for the warm reception lol.. I've actually been reading everyone's post for the better part of a year.

In any case, I was amazed when I saw huge holes being opened, and better yet, sustained on that first drive.

I am really fed up with the Frerrote vs Feeley threads....
My take is that they are both mediocre at best, temporary solutions - Saban is just itching to get some talent soon enough in that position... but he'll do the best he can with "what he has."

Anyways, back to the O-Line; if it can hold up, aka if they can consistently play like they did on that first drive, then I would think that we could even conceivably make a run for a wild-card spot. Keep in mind guys, the O-Line is the heart of an offense - for God's sake, look at Brian Griese, Drew Breese and the list goes on. If our line can buy our mediocre QBs some time, then they will be serviceable....

The biggest joy for me occured near Christmas, when we hired Saban. And I have been amazed with Houck's genius - no wonder we pay him the big bucks. The turn-around that Vernon has made is mostly due to solid coaching (where is Tony Wise, mopping floors perhaps ?) - could you imagined what would have become of him if Wanny boy were still here? He was inactive last year for a couple of games!! Geez'

see this is how things are supposed to go in preseason. you look really good and then we come in and say "ok guys calm down its preseason lets see how we do in the regular season" but at this point who cares lol its nice to have something to build on.

I have said all along, if you give the QB enough time to throw the ball any QB (that has made it this far) will succeed and look like a good QB. What distinguishes a great QB is what they do under pressure.

With time our QB's will be fine for this year. That being said, unless one steps up and shows they are worthy, Saban will have to find a new QB this offseason.
