Yes it will take time for the rookies to adjust to the NFL game, but you can't sit there and say we are not better in the secondary right now then we were at the end of last season. We return Bell and Allen, who are two Pro Bowl caliber players. Gibril Wilson is a definite upgrade over Hill, so really the only question mark is the other cornerback position.
Goodman played great last year, and it definitely was a shot when he left in free agency. However, it is not like we made only one move to try and replace him. There is a three way competition right now between Eric Green, Vontae Daivs and Sean Smith for that job. It may be unrealistic to expect any of them to step right in and dominate from day one, but it is realistic to think that at least one of them and possibly all of them will be good enough to do an OK job out of the gate.
Vontae Davis and Sean Smith definitely have the talent and skill to be much better pros then Andre Goodman. It might not show on day one of their rookie season, but it the long run, they were major upgrades.
I think we will be fine in the secondary, because we return our best two secondary players, we upgraded the safety position, added some real good young talent at cornerback and safety, and we have one of the best secondary coaches in the league in Todd Bowles. Not only that, the additions of Tony McDaniels, Jason Taylor and Cameron Wake, the continued development of Matt Roth will help improve the pass rush which will help take pressure off the secondary.
I am not all that worried. I am actually very excited about the secondary, because we finally have some serious talent. Like you said, it may be a work in progress with the young guys, but I do believe it is a strength on this team, not a weakness.
