Our Worst Season

Pretty much.

Cameron was a disaster. The players had zero respect for him. He had zero control over them.

Simply awful.

Most definitely. I was one of those dummies hoping for a spark from our rookie QB, John Beck. Instead I was reduced to celebrating like a wild man when Camarillo took that slant from Cleo Lemon to the house.

Completely lost season.

The worst seasons for me are the ones that least lived up to the promise. That would include this one since it’s been a while since I was so excited for a season to then see it be over before it started. Shulas last season was another one. I think we had something like 14 first round picks going into it only to again fail at the end.

The 04 team was pretty awful too. The 07 team was really bad though. Actually talent wise week 1 that was a 5-11/6-10 team. After injuries mounted it was an 0-16 team. We were loaded with guys who had no business being out there. We were lucky to win one and had Billick gone on 4th and goal from the 2 we don’t win one.

2007 was the worst, but it became too comical to actually be disappointing. Fans checked out early that season. The most disappointing season for me was 1993, Marino hurt, Mitchell hurt, then they lose five in a row and miss the playoffs. That team would have been Shula’s best team to challenge Buffalo. 1995 was the next most disappointing watching Shula’s legacy fade. Then 2002 when Ray Lucas basically sabotaged the season and they blew the last two and missed the playoffs.

Yeah 93 was disappointing. I remember thinking that we could still go to the super bowl even without Marino at one point.

Some of those 90s games were devastating.

Emotionally the 1974 season was easily the worst. We were the ultimate lame duck with Csonka, Kiick and Warfield departing to the WFL in 1975. The roster was the same but from the opening shocker loss at New England you could sense the energy simply wasn't there, not to the '72 and '73 level. It was kind of like the final Heat season with the Big Three, if anyone wants a recent reference point. All season it seemed possible we could win a third straight title, but everything would have to unfold perfectly in the playoffs and if it did not, then nothing would ever be the same again. Get ready for the big plunge.

I cried all the way through Hee Haw after that plunge, or specifically the closing ticks after the Clarence Davis catch in Oakland.

Hee Haw was a one-hour show. I was 15, not 6. No apologies. That's how much it hurt. The next week was Christmas break. It didn't feel like Christmas at all. Long faces and stunned silence everywhere. I'll never forget walking through Dadeland with the lack of energy so apparent. Silence at the checkout counters. Only the youngest kids were still cheerful and unknowing. Then once back at school I heard countless similar stories of how everyone reacted.

I'm not sure younger fans realize that Miamians in that era assumed the Dolphins would always be champions, with maybe a weird 2-3 year gap without a title if lots of flukes temporarily got in the way.
