This is who they have us taking, and my comments added. :)
1. Levi Brown OT Penn State - he is probably the most popular mock draft pick for us in the 1st round, combining all mock drafts and if we do take him, there is an excellent chance he is a week 1 starter, though likely not initially at OLT. I can't argue that we need O-linemen badly.
2. Tim Crowder DE Texas - this is a solid pick and addresses the need for a player to fill David Bowens' old roles on the defense and STs. He could back up at SOLB and OE.
2a. John Beck QB BYU - among all the QBs mentioned as possible picks to Miami, he maybe gets the least mention, but could be a big surprise when it all shakes out as to which rookie QB performs the best the next 5 or so years. Some scouts feel he has the best touch on deep passes of any rookie QB this year.
3. Justin Durant OLB Hampton - sleeper at the position, has all the physical tools and instincts to excell, just a bit of an unknown, playing at a lower level of competition.
4. Daymeion Hughes CB Cal - some of you don't like him b/c he ran poor times at the combine, but on the field in the pass happy Pac 10 he was a very effective corner. IMO, he would fit well in Capers scheme.
6. Jay Alford DT Penn State - He could compete for the backup to Holliday playing the 3 technique. He is an experienced starter at Penn State, and a high motor quick twitch up the field attack type of DT. He'd be a very good pick if gotten this late.
6a. Julius Wilson OT UAB (they don't have the Mare trade in their book, so I just added the 199th pick and player that is now ours) - he'd also be a very good pick if gotten in the 6th. Played OT in college, but a huge man with long arms that could make a better NFL guard because he would probably have trouble pass blocking as a OT at this level.
7. Mike Walker WR Central Fla. - good size, very good speed to help keep defenses honest, and has soft hands. Not a bad pick for the 7th round.
7a. Jay Richardson DE Ohio State - he could compete as a backup to Roth at 5 technique LDE. Played sparingly at OSU before his senior season, but opened some eyes with a solid effort at the combine.
Not exactly how I would do it, but really, it's not a bad mock IMO, and addresses most of our needs. After the draft look for us to sign more UDFAs than at anytime in recent history, including 5 more OL and a TE or 2.
They have a very interesting stat in their book: "A recent study of NFL two-deep rosters showed that depth charts were occupied by 23% undrafted free agents over the last two years. The third highest "round" for starters is undrafted free agents - first round - 27%, second round - 18%, undrafted free agents - 16%, and third round - 12%. Keep in mind that 645 undrafted free agents sign each year compared to 255 draft picks. League scouting departments, with the help of their coaches, can mold a diamond out of a lump of coal."
Based on how OURLADS ranks the players, I would take Ryan Kalil at #60, (they have him going 61st) and Drew Stanton in the 3rd, (they have him going the next pick after ours). They rate Leroy Harris and Dan Mozes as 7th rounders and I would consider Harris at 7, and Mozes at 7a. That would very strongly address our OL with 3 total. Harris and Mozes are ranked with centers and it may seem we are overdrafting there, but both have a lot of guard experience too. Many consider Harris' best pro position could be guard.
Dan Shonka who runs OURLADS now, is a long time experienced scout, so their rankings do have credibility in my opinion.
