NORMAN  Blue skies and warming temperatures greeted Oklahoma's first spring scrimmage Saturday at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. OU coach Bob Stoops liked his team's progress.

"It was only our second day in pads, so it was about what you would expect," he said. "We're a little rusty, but I like the effort and attitude. We're developing a lot of depth with a lot of young guys getting reps."

The offense scored a pair of touchdowns, a three-yard run by RB Allen Patrick and a five-yard jaunt by QB Joey Halzle.

Patrick had 10 carries for 28 yards. Adrian Peterson, who is wearing a blue jersey to restrict contact, carried six times for 20 yards.

Stoops said he was pleased with his defense's performance.

"We're much farther along than a year ago," he said. "There are just a lot fewer mistakes."

Strong side LB Ryan Reynolds topped the defense with five tackles and one interception. Weak side LB Rufus Alexander also have five stops.

Sooner quarterbacks completed 16 of 27 passes for 189 yards. Rhett Bomar hit on 10 of 19 for 106 yards. He was intercepted once. Halzle was good on 6 of 8 83 yards.

"Joey looked really good, and so did Rhett," Stoops said. "For only being here for four practices, Joey was awesome with the way he handled it all. To be able to handle it mentally that way shows that he likes those situations.

Fred Strong was one of three players to log two receptions. His yardage total of 45 yards led the team.

Oklahoma returns to spring practice Monday. The workout begins at 3:45 p.m., and will be outdoors and open to the public weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, the practice will move indoors to the Everest Training Center and will be closed.

Well it looks like Rhett Bomar might lose his starting job to an outstanding Juco QB Joey Halzle, people say he is the second coming of Josh Huepel, now I really like Rhett but if he isnt the better QB so be it, but maybe this will motivate Rhett to get better.

Oh and AD didnt have 28 yrds, he had 3 runs well over 20 yards, he is still the man :D

i still think peterson is a year away from having a season close to how good his freshman campaign was.
