The first thing I was looking for from Saban was the removal of that stupid 8 yard out play on the right side of the field. Guys like Aaron Glen and Ty Law have mad a career on that pass. Since Marino's last days, that play has been picked off and returned for a score more times than any others I've seen and it happened again last night. First of all, it's designed poorly. There is no one there to help like a swinging RB. Secondly none of our QB's have the arm to get the ball out there. That's a hard throw to make and Miami's current staff doesn't have the ability to make it. I was sick when I saw them run it last night and as SOON as Feeley threw it, I told my wife "Well, that's a TD the other way" and sho 'nuff it was.

very good observation. it is a high risk pass that really doesnt have that much upside.

ESPN NFL 2K5 is so realistic that I even threw a pick-6 on a play like that.

With AJ? ;-) Wow, that IS realistic...

Good observation about the 8yd out. It's not a good risk/reward play. If we had some real speedsters other than Chambers and a decent O-line we could run out-n-ups. The veteran DB's would jump on the pattern and unless there was tight saftey coverage the receiver would be endzone-bound! Sounds good on paper anyway... ;-)

I agree somewhat, for some reason this play has been a thorn on our side since Marino's last few seasons (he threw his share of pick 6's then) It didn't matter who the QB was, Jay, A.J., Sage, Lucas, Griese....it was the same problem with each one.

i think the 8 yard out is a fine play if you establish a deep game...

if ima corner and i know first off that your QB has no time in the pocket and hes really not going deep, what can i do? as the WR approaches me i dont need to backpedal too fast to anticipate a go route cause i know hes gonna cut the route and go either in, out or curl... so i watch the QB and you see the WR cut and you break on the ball... pick 6

now if you are the CB and your playing against a WR on a team that goes deep and your playing like that and the QB gets some time and the WR then can burn past you because you were anticipating a short route your not gonna do that anymore and the out pattern works great...

You also have to look at the protection breakdown on that play. There was a guys at A.J.'s legs when he threw that so there is no way he could get the velocity he needed to make that throw. That pick was a result of a combination of things: Bad O-line, Bad route run by the receiver, and a horrible descision made by the quarterback.:smackhead Just a poorly executed play overall.

And don't forget the #1 reason why it was a bad play....he was throwing it to Donald Lee. :D

you can't throw it against tight man, it works great against a zone

Its a high risk ,low reward play.Even great QBs get picked off with that play.I would put that play in the backburner with our QBs.

If they ran the out-and-up (My personal favorite route) a few times a game then maybe the DB would be a little hesitant on breaking on the out. The first time they do run the out-and-up, that DB is gonna be toast, fully expecting the pass to come on the out. Wow 7 years in the making to set up the Up.

That play helps the running game. If the cornerback doesn't have to worry about the out pattern he can cheat inside more

That can't be true. I've read here many times that one of AJ's great attributes is his arm strength. Who threw that pick six again? Oh, yeah.
