Should we be satisfied with the depth we have at the Outside linebacker position? I see we have some guys but what we don't have is anyone that is spectacular. Spragan a good linebacker but he dosen't strike me as someone who has amazing pass rushing skills. Good against the run and decent against the pass is what i see in him. The Supplemental draft is on thursday and what i want to know is which linebacker should we take and why? My vote is for Brooks because i think he is the closest thing that i have seen that Saban wants in his outside backer.

Depth? Yes.

Starters? No.

I still have to wonder how much of a natural weak side guy Channing Crowder is but he seemed in Mini Camp to be getting a lot better in that coverage-oriented role...making a lot of plays on the ball like he did against the Chargers in 2005.

As for the strong side, SUPPOSEDLY when Capers reviewed the film he came away impressed with Donnie Spragan...and at times I have to admit he looked impressive to me as well. But that's just not a position that smells right for now until we've got a 260 pound monster end rusher there that can jam the tight end into oblivion and take on offensive tackles in pass rush.

For now I think Keith Newman will be good depth. Sedrick Hodge could be decent as exactly what Saban brought him here as...a pass coverage specialist.

Well put. I would like for us to get someone like Brooks or Berryman. Brooks seems to have more of the attributes that Saban was looking for when we were trying to get Arrington. He is amazing when it comes to rushing the passer and he also has solid tackling. Great athlete as well.

We are good at depth, but the problem with our depth is that none of them are good starters.

Spragan did a fine job last year and I think he will end up winning he job, but he isn't a guy that will knock you out of your seat with a huge play.

If we draft Brooks in the supp draft this Thursday, then I'd day that he will probably be our SLB and make a even bigger impact then Spragan, Newman or Hodge would make if they were starting.

Well I don't think Brooks starts in his rookie year. He's here late, still has conditioning work to do, our playbook is very very complicated (ask Zach) and I just don't think he takes to it well enough to start as a rookie.

But I think he could be like a 5 to 7 sack guy as a part-timer...sort of a pass rush specialist.

If we draft Brooks or Berryman i can pretty much gurantee he will be a starter by the end of the year. If he's in any sort of shape or has been conditioning himself like a smart player would he will win the starting job by week 8. Half the reason Manny Wright isn't starting right now is because he is a lazy *** and dosen't condition himself like a player that wants to do well in the NFL would.

so basically ck your saying you wish we had merriman

Absolutely, but who doesn't wish we had him?

I will say this...If Brooks maintains 260 pounds and is comfy at that weight, he's got Merriman potential.

wow! i'm going crazy just thinking about how much potential this guy would have if we got our hands on him. You have some of best defensive minds in coaching helping to mold a player with so much raw potential. He's gifted physically and with Zach, Saban, and Capers helping him the sky is the limit with him. I hope San Fran and New England pass on this guy.

That would be friggin sweet if he will end up being anything like Merriman.

Just once I wanna see someone in the pros pull the maneuver that Brooks and Arrington both pulled in college where they leap forward at the snap and sack the QB before he can even get through his dropback.
