With or Without Big Ben there is still a game to play on Thursday and I feel we really have to win it, especially while Pittsburgh is playing a backup QB, to prove we are amongst the better teams in the NFL. I would never count out any team in today's NFL especially the defending Super Bowl champs as football is the ultimate team game and is was never going to be Big Ben vs the Miami Dolphins anyway. Here is my take on the game.

I'd say the team that passes the ball more efficiently will win on Thursday night. Both of these 2 teams can preach the running game all they want but I just can't see either of them having all that much success vs each of the front sevens they will be facing (Pittsburgh gave up one 100 yard rusher last year and we gave up two). I think this should give us an advantage as Culpepper is our starter and has taken all of the snaps in TC while Batch is obviously a backup, but remember DC hasn't played in a regular season game since October of 2005 and he could be rusty. The Steelers will also probably dumb down the playbook for Batch to make him feel more comfortable and give him a lot of short easy throws. I expect the Steelers to play extremely conservative and sit back and wait for us to make mistakes, than capitalize on them. If we make them we will be all done regardless of whom their QB is. I think Miami needs to keep the vaunted Pittsburgh defense off balance with a good mixture of run (even if we're not that successful) and pass, so they just can't tee of on Daunte. I don't expect Ronnie to have a great game running the football and think anyone who does is kidding him or herself and should start the famous "Ronnie is a bust" threads now. It will not be him, it will be the defense he is facing. But anyway, if we can build an early lead and force Batch to throw often, he will make mistakes and that will give us a nice advantage. I give us the advantage in a high scoring affair but give Pittsburgh the advantage in a conservative game that would be decided in the 4th quarter.

There is my take, can't wait until Thursday, Go FINZ.

If Ronnie can't run it will be BOTH the defense he faces AND our OL's lack of run blocking. Frankly I'm more worried about our OL run blocking than the defense we face.

If the game is decided in the FOURTH quarter, we should have the advantage, we outscored our opponents like crazy last season in the 4th qtr.

Good post.

WOW
Nicely put, and I can't thank u enough for saying its the defence not ronnies choice if he does good. Everyone has to remember that a running back can't do didly without an O-line. Plus Batch is not going to be that big of a pushover. He started two games for Pitts. last year and won them both. he has experience so dont under rate him.

we need to come to play this week. it won't be a easy win, even with batch they are a top tier team and should not be taken lightly. It will be a close game we just need to execute and we should be able to come away with the win.

If anyone is going to be overconfident it will be the reigning SB champs. Even w/o their starting QB they were 2-0 with Batch last year. What would give them any reason not to be confident. Just because the media is jumping all over the Miami bandwagon don't think for 1 second that Nick will allow his players to get big heads and lose focus.

I doubt that there will be any 'over confidence' .... the team SHOULD be confident going into the 1st game of the season ...

After that 1st drive .... nerves are gone and confidence is derived from SUCCESS on the field !!!

It won't matter 1 bit at that point whether or not BIG BEN is playing or not ...

Under confidence can be a killer as well. We just have to go into Pittsburgh with the mindset that we CAN hang with these guys at their stadium

It's going to be a very tough game regardless of who the Steelers starting QB is going to be. I see a lot of over-confident posters here this week, and although I believe we have an advantage heading into this game {no BB}, the Steelers aren't going to just lay down for us. It will take our "A game" to beat the Steelers on Thursday in my opinion, and right now, we've got just as many questionmarks as they do....

This could be a very physical, defensive battle. The Steelers defense is going to make sure of that, and I just hope our guys are prepared. This isn't the same team that won a Super Bowl a year ago, but they're still one of the best coached teams in the AFC Conference. I'm not overlooking the Steelers at all, I think thay have a great shot at beating us with / woithout Roethlisberger...

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Batch knows the system and took a lot of reps with the first team this offseason. Talent wise,he's marginal at best but he knows the playbook, has some mobility and is best at timing patterns.I don't think his long ball is much of a threat.

I agree. I think the Steelers defense will really step it up a notch with Big Ben being out. I think we'll be up for it and will win, but I think anyone who honestly thinks Thursday night will be a cakewalk is just not being realistic.

Very tough game, bottom line. I am def not getting over confident, cause I have seen too many Dolphin debacles!
