Penalties can come from being under-disciplined, but they can also come from players' playing on edge, trying too hard not to make mistakes, which reflects over-discipline.

During the game against Denver, the announcers quoted Zach as saying, "everyone is on edge -- and I mean everyone." If everyone is still on edge, then we might be playing on eggshells rather than with reckless abandon.

Sure McMike's taunting penalty today wouldn't fit into this category, but all the offsides penalties sure would, and that has seemed to be the main type of penalty we've committed all year, on offense AND defense. Maybe everyone is just too jumpy out there -- LITERALLY.

You are right.

Whatever it is it has got to be fixed ASAP. We will not have a iota of a chance at the playoffs if we keep giving up first downs by penalty and make 2nd and shorts thrid and longs on offense because of penalties.

Right, but we could make the mistake of thinking Saban needs to be harder on them in practice, which would just make things worse if the thread is true.

Bump in response to all the "we need more discipline" threads.

you are making excuses..
Making excuses and finding reasons are two different things. I'm sure Saban and his staff will be finding reasons as early as tomorrow morning. All I'm doing here is raising the point that the penalties may reflect TOO MUCH discipline rather than not enough.

Disagree totally. Just the opposite. Penalties and turnovers cost us this game. That, to me, is the definition of undisciplined play. If these two things can't get corrected soon, we will not win another game, period.

Playing on edge, well do you think the teams that played under Shula or Lombardi were on edge? Those coaches were both disciplinarians and there teams didn't get 1/3 of the penalties this team gets.
