The Indiana Pacers finally completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks for forward Al Harrington on Tuesday.

The Pacers acquired Harrington and center John Edwards in exchange for a 2007 first-round pick. Harrington spent the first six years of his career with the Pacers before spending the last two in Atlanta.

"We've had Al before," Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said. "He was a good player for us when we had him the first time. He comes back with more seasoning. Most importantly, he fits in with what we're trying to do at this point."
Walsh and team president Larry Bird considered Harrington one of the summer's top three free agents, along with Ben Wallace and Peja Stojakovic.

The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 18.6 points and 6.9 rebounds for the Hawks last season and was the central figure to the Pacers plans to recover from a 41-41 season that ended with a first-round playoff exit.

The deal followed weeks of speculation. Negotiations slowed when Harrington fired agent Andy Miller and replaced him with Arn Tellem earlier this month. Reports then surfaced that Harrington was likely headed elsewhere, but Walsh said Tuesday that negotiations never died.

Harrington is expected to be a key to Indiana's transformation from a defense-oriented team to an up-tempo, athletic squad. The Pacers also have added rookies James White and Shawne Williams, guards Jimmie Hunter, Orien Greene and Darrell Armstrong and forwards Marquis Daniels, Maceo Baston, Rawle Marshall and Josh Powell. In all, the Pacers have added 11 players since the end of last season.

its a good trade for the pacers. I think they COULD be the 2nd best team in the east, they will fight it out with Detriot and Chicago imo. This move gives them flexibility on the type of lineups they can play since he can lineup at the 3 and the 4.

I don't get it. Wasn't Granger supposed to be the Artest replacement? I realize they want to get more athletic and run, but playing O'neal at center is a death sentence in the playoffs. Mabey they can win a few more games in the regular season and compete in the central, but its disturbing when they have more SFs and less PGs on their roster than the Hawks.

it's more about versatility.

Granger- 2/3/4(if need be)
Harrington-3/4
Williams-3/4
O'Neal-4/5
Daniels-1(if need be)/2/3
Armstrong-1/2
White-1(need be)/2/3
Greene-1/2
Jackson-2/3

Last year's Pacers team add no versatility, that is why they struggled mightily.

So thats the reason to add a bunch of players that can play at an average level at multiple positions....versatility. Worked out really well for the Knicks and Hawks didnt it?

lol, different situations. Hawks didn't have a PG, and only had 1 big man (Pachulia). Knicks have a bunch of players that play 1 on 1.

Tinsley and Foster are better than Lue/JJ and Pachulia? Or is Harrison supposed to come alive and be a dominant center? And please spare me the argument that Daniels is going to be the savior at PG.

good move for the pacers imo

gives them a starting lineup that would look like

PG Jammall Tinsley
SG Stephen Jackson
SF Danny Granger
PF Al Harrington
C Jermaine Oneal

I'm not so sure that is the lineup. I think Granger might be the sixth man. Foster will probably start games.

I'd guess something more along the lines of:

PG: Tinsley
SG: Daniels
SF: Harrington
PF: O'neal
C: Foster

Jackson cant guard the small and quick guards that seem to be all over in the East. Just look at the difference in pts given up when Jones was at SG in the playoffs. The problem is that you have three players that are most comfortable as SFs in Jackson, Harrington, and Granger. Jackson is probably best suited to come off the bench anyways but I'm afraid Granger is going to get buried again.

I'm not, but Tinsley/Anthony Johnson was a better PG combo than Lue/JJ/Ivey/Stoudamire.

And Pachulia is better than Foster, but he by himself is not better than Foster,O'Neal,Harrison, and Pollard.

i think it put them adhead of the pistons at 3rd best in the east behind the champs and the bulls
