The last couple of weeks have hurt... a lot.

...and it's made me reflect on something that all too many fans miss. Health/injuries are EVERYTHING in football.. everything.

So the next time someone says something like... "brother, I know he's good, but he's been so injury prone", maybe... remember this moment in time.

On draft day... or during the annual Free Agency madness... if a brother says... gosh, he's been injured a lot... maybe, go another way.

I would say that 5 of the last 6 players that we've heavily invested in have had this issue: Tua, Howard, Jones, Phillips, and Armstead all had this knock upon them. Only Tyreek has come in clean (though, there could be a behavioral issue with Hill)...

Yes... great players... fragile, great players who let us beat the Bills... and lose to the Jets.

Going forward... I certainly hope we opt for sturdy, over pretty.

Byron Jones had only missed 1 game in his 5 year career before we signed him. And had still only missed 3 games in 7 seasons before this year. Why is he included in this list?

Well... you may not like my linkage here, but here's my thinking.
I didn't mind his initial signing... at all. Salaries were going up quickly and he was a very good, generally healthy cover corner. I endorsed that contract.
What killed me was the restructuring. THAT was the mistake, and it was a mistake made on a player who was beginning to age. He was nicked up more and more often...
So I chose to include him based on the cap-killing restructure. We NEVER should have done that... or kept Hoard when he started crying.

I don't know if he's right or wrong, but I have heard Grier say that when it comes to medical it's really hard to predict. He has seen guys with no medical problems in college have numerous injuries in the NFL and vice versa. I wish there was an easy answer because this injury thing has sidetracked our season. Some may disagree, but I think we really had a good chance to make some noise this year. I am bummed. :-(

One of the biggest surprises for me was that after the 10 days between games 4 or 5 of our best players still weren't right. X has to miss the game. He is, I think this is Hoop's phrase, mission critical. Simply, the defense is much different without him. We were stretched thin covering for Jones but with both top corners out we 've got trouble. The pass rush seemed less effective as the game wore on. Too many major players hurt to really compete with a well coached super hungry team at home. The Jets usually find a way to self destruct, they didn't yesterday. We'll see them again, hopefully at a little closer to full strength. Between the new rule shelving Teddy for the day, the refs calling that PI and a number of other phantom calls and having to start Skyler we were toast.
