Palm Beach Post: Projecting the Miami Dolphins’ 53-man roster

I don't know how Matthews is as a returner, but Thigpen was a damn good one at IU and the CFL. He's the first guy in CFL history to score a TD 5 different ways (Run, reception, PR, KR, Missed FG)

it looks to me like right now at least if matthews was to make the roster it would be as a returner...at least to start while they develop him as a wr...that said i wasn't overly impressed with his kickoff return abilities anyways..on the one like almost 50 yard return or whatever that was sprung cause of a nice kick out block but he did have the vision to see the lane so that counts for something...i'd be interested in seeing matthews return some more punts...only one game but i didn't see 4.4 anything from him in full gallop the other night

i think thigpen has the inside return job track right now but we'll see what he looks like tonight...

Was surprised at how slow Matthews looked. Saw some plays at Nevada where he looked much more explosive. Maybe it's just the competition. *shrugs*

possibly. Not exactly the same situation but look at Pat White compared to when he got to us. When he played his first game with the Fins I didn't believe it was him cause they guy at WVU was confident and quick. White looked tiny, timid, and indecisive. I know White wasn't big to begin with, but there are guys smaller than him that look like they belong in the NFL. White looked like a 6 year old that dressed up as a football player for Trick or Treat

yeah i expected more explosion also...and i definitely didn't see a top gear...that night at least

I will maintain that WR will be decided by the preseason games. Now we can probably guess which WRs make the team, but if you aren't making plays in game situations, I don't care how good you look in practice.

The thing I think 7/11 has going for him is the starters are noticing him and taking notice. You always hear about guys looking good against the 3rd and 4th teamers during practice, but Reggie, Moore, Garrard, Tannehill, Incognito, and the coaches have all really noticed him.

if they're serious about hogan as a 53 candidate they need to bump him up at least a little and let him run with the 2's beginning tonight...hard knocks has outed them on any plans for the p squad they may have had so they have to understand they cut him very possible he's poached...

imo this things all hot air unless this kid this week or at minimum next week gets some real run with the 2 deep units...

Pretty good list.

As long as Bush and Thomas enter the season healthy, I don't see Slaton making it. I also doubt we would be able to stash some of those guys listed (like Cunningham, for instance) onto the practice squad.

Just my opinion on a few things.

1. Don't see us keeping 4 RB's on active roster. Steve Slaton is gone.
2. Eric Steinbach is gone, either Jerry or Garner make the squad.
3. Final WR selection seems a bit "Fan" based, Hogan provides nothing on ST. Would like to keep him though.
4. We only keep 4 FS/SS. Spitler makes the squad with the safety cut down.

Heard so many good things about Jamaal Westerman during camp, does he make the squad?

seems like he only looked good early before the pads went on. Since then, he's been passed on the depth chart by Shelby and it sounds like he may have fallen behind Root as well.

So everyone seems to be in agreement (at least, so far) that Gates is gone?

In the last 2 years, I've seen Marlon Moore doing great work on ST. I hope he's fully recovered from injury though. I think he tore an acl last year on a ST play. Wallace is a better receiver now than Moore is, largely because that injury obliterated Moore's chances at WR while Wallace got his. With the scarcity of speed in the top of the WR depth chart, I think Gates has to be given a shot. If there isn't any threat of going downtown, the safeties will be near the L.O.S. and make the short passing game miserable. I have to wonder if the injuries will take some quickness/speed out of Hartline's game. If it does then he's truly useless, as he was never that good at snatching the ball from a defender with any consistency. Wallace is the only guy now with any physical power to box out or outfight a DB for a ball, which he has to do all the time because he struggles to get open.

speed can only do so much for you. I remember last year camp reports said he was extremely fast, but he struggled in pads and even ran into a fence trying to stop. And it's not like he's a great return man either

I wish Gates would step it up.

His speed is killer.

The most interesting seems to be WR for me as well i think Wallace is clearly making the team the coaching staff loves his talent whether he puts it all together we will see, my wrs are:

Nanee, Wallace, Bess, Hartline, Moore, and if we keep 6 Pruit
