Two of the top runners in Auburn history will come face-to-face for the first time this weekend when Stephen Davis and the Carolina Panthers play Cadillac Williams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
By the time Sunday's game is over, Davis fully expects to be recognized as the best Auburn running back in the league right now.
"Auburn running backs, we have some good ones in the league right now," Davis said Thursday. When pressed to say who is the best, he didn't hesitate: "Shoot, me. Did you think I was going to say one of them?"
It's hard to compare which of the two is having a better season.
Davis, in his 10th season and coming off major knee surgery last year, has a disappointing 358 yard rushing through seven games. But his nine rushing touchdowns rank third in the NFL. Williams, a rookie, became the first player in NFL history to begin his career with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games. But he sprained his left foot Sept. 18, missed two games and was ineffective last week against San Francisco. In five games this season, Williams has 467 yards but just two touchdowns.
