They will not wash this coming season down the toilet. They will draft players they think will help immediately. They will bring in key, veteran free agents to fill perceived holes, and field the most competitive team they can. Will this season still end up in the toilet? Maybe. Probably. But the league is designed to allow quick turnarounds, if you draft smartly, develop players, and find players who can play well within your schemes. I have no delusions of being a playoff team next year, but there are plenty of examples of quick turnarounds in the NFL.
You can go out and sign key agents, and spend your cap dollars, as long as you are looking forward and making sure you are not set up for salary cap hell in a year or two. If you can bring in a couple real good players and still have flexibility next year, you do it. The key is effectively managing the cap.
However, beyond drafts and FA, the real variable here is developing young players. Young players making major leaps are what can get teams over the hump and relevant again in a hurry. D. Anderson and B. Edwards in Cleveland are a good example. Unlike prior years, where our cupboard was pretty bare, we do have some young guys who have some potential . What if Beck/Ginn breakout next year? What if Solai develops his technique? What if R. Wright, A. Wright, or Q. Moses step up next year and turn into a force on defense? There is always hope (especially in the offseason).
