Currently other than the LB Pace and the OL Smiley it appears Miami is just picking up very good special teams players leading me to beleive Parcells is still not sure how he is going to use the 1st pick in this years draft yet. Sure he would like to trade down but he is not sure that is an option yet and there are 5-6 players he could choose from that could justify the 1st pick on the draft. I beleive we have plenty of money to spend in FA but feel that Pacells and company are holding off spending it until after the draft to see which holes will still need to be filled by FA market. I also feel that by not making priority of spending money on expensive FA so far Parcells is using that to his advantage to keep other teams in the dark regarding the Dolphins intentions in this years draft in an attempt to get one of them to hopefully trade up in this years draft with the Dolphins.

The only issue with that train of thought is who will be left after the draft ?? It wasn't a banner year for FA anyway and most of the guys that can really help us are gone...nearly anyone else we get now will only be STers...

I think you are right he wants to leave evryone guessing

I think most of our needs will be met in the draft and lets keep in mind this is a 2-3 year project

I agree with the trade down option...why not? I mean consider we do pick Chris Long numero uno, that pick = $60 million contract easily. Is it really worth it to spend that much on a DE that in his first year will probably get 4-6 sacks and 40-50 tackles.....pass. Trade down, get Vernon Ghoulston from Ohio State at a later pick and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd to get a lineman or corner.

only one problem Ghoulston wont be there long, maybe trade to atlanta for Hall and 3 then Ghoulston

FYI... We didnt get Pace, Torbor started 9 games and played well for the giants, Starks is starting caliber and was picked up to compete, the trade for ferguson (didnt know if you were counting that since it was a trade) but he definately will start and wont participate in special teams

i think parcells basically knows who the pick will be, but he has to keep the other teams in the dark with the politicaly correct " we havent decided yet" statement so it opens up potential trades
like if the falcons think we will take ryan they may trade up or dallas if they think we are taking mcfadden

he isnt going to come out and say oh yeah we are taking jake long or chris long or matt ryan, what would be the reason to do that?

Where I was coming from was that we were willing to spend the big bucks on Smiley and Pace (even though we did not sign Pace) and the rest of the pickups appear average at best. I was unaware Starks is that good and Ferguson was on IR most of last year from what I have read though when healthy he was a starter. Tarbor fits our D Pope mold sort of.\

I think he wants to keep the "draft Ryan" smokescreen up long enough to force Atlanta's hand. If they bite, make a deal.
I personally think ATL can get him without a deal at #3. Lets hope the Smokescreen works. I bet US requesting Ryan's tape is all part of it.

No this was not a banner year. This FA class is considered quite thin. I agree Miami will fill in the holes after the draft. Another big date in FA is June 1st. Teams will cut players they couldn't before due to contracts. There are plenty of quality players out there. BP and Ireland are just being cap smart.

I think Parcells & Co. had a pretty good idea of who was their Top 10 in order for at least a month now, and after the Combine it's pretty solidified. They've just been playing the uncertainty to their advantage trying to scare a team (any team really) into trading up for their top pick. I expect them to wait until the last possible moment then select Jake Long. IMHO, it makes the most sense, long career dominating lineman who I believe will be a solid pass pro LT and one of the most dominating run blocking linemen in the league for 10 years. He doesn't get injured, doesn't get into trouble, doesn't take plays off and doesn't commit penalties. That sounds a lot like the cornerstone of a Parcells line to me.

But they realize we can get similar value anywhere in the top 5, whether it's Jake Long, Chris Long, Gholston or whomever--and trading down saves a significant chunk of cap space. Getting multiple first rounders (even late ones like the Cowboys have) would really help expedite the rebuilding process. So, the uncertainty of not letting anyone know your picks until you're forced to make them is a good strategy.

I love people like you who think it's as simple as "wanting" to trade down, and it's done.

It's so difficult of a pick to trade. Not as easy as 1,2...like you make it out to be.
