Parcells style of evaluation:

after watching Parcells for a number of years, I think I have a handle on how he evaluates players. They are in some sort of order (I am not sure what it is)

1. Ability-- can the player play the position full time or does he need a backup to rotate with
2. size-- We know Parcells loves the big guys if the player as the ability and is his bigger than some one else, he will get the call.
3. Coachabilty-- If a player can be coached then that is a plus in Parcells will spend the time to train him.( Ginn and Bess here)
4. Reliability/work effort-- Parcells wants player to review films, he wants player to work at their position outside the practice windows. IF a player is lacking strength, Parcells expects the player to be working to correct that. To be a Parcells type player, you need to be at the facility before him leave after him, he must see you working when he leaves his office. (Rickey Williams is the example here) this is why JT was traded away.
5. Cost-- IF two players area equal, then the cheaper player will get the job (The kicker situation in training camp). Parcells doesn't spend money needlessly but at the same time he will spend money to upgrade a position
6. Toughness- this is purely a judgement call. Parcells wants mentally and physically tough players. (Rickey here, Ronnie, Long, Merling, and I can name about 10 others.)

a couple of other things:
IF there is a player available to upgrade a position, expect that to happen. (Chad P is the great example here). If a good defensive player is available during the off season, you will see Crowder gone.

I expect that Soliai to be gone after this year, He was suspended twice. He has issues.

Satele needs to improve or he will be gone as well.

These are just my thoughts and thought this was a good time t share them.

I think the way you handle players is the most important attribute Parcells has. Anyone can find talented players, willing to work who are coachable, but it's how you handle the individual personalities that will be the difference. Saban proved he could find coachable talented players, he just sucked and getting them to do what it is he wanted them to do without them knowing that's what he was doing. Parcells has made it an art form and it's very obvious in TS.

SABAN? He knew his football, alright. But PARCELLS is from another universe! He'll break you down, in order to build you back up...into a better, stronger, smarter player. That can happen anywhere, at any time. When he was coaching the GIANTS, I was living in NYC. At the games, you could hear PARCELLS berating a player way up in the cheap seats for a mistake. But he was always coaching them as well: correcting their mistakes. Then, in a KEY POINT, he'd call them over, tell them what he wanted them to do, and send them back in, adding something like "Now get in there and do it. I KNOW YOU'RE GOOD, so don't prove me wrong". And as so often happens, when that same player made the game-changing play, who's on the sidelines going crazy, and cheering like a H.S. kid? Yeah, PARCELLS. He'll be shouting even louder "See? I was right! You're good! I KNEW you could do it. I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT", or some such. PARCELLS is a unique "players' Coach". Players respond to him.

SABAN tried PARCELLS' approach, when he brought M WRIGHT to the point of tears. The only difference between the two of them is that PARCELLS would've succeeded.

I was thinking the same thing...sounds pretty generic...

You may think it is what every coach wants, but think about it. during the last preseason, how many players were cut before deadlines? there were a few players that got bounced becasue they were not coachable or not working hard enough.

take a look at Dallas: they have TO who is not coach-able, they knew that before they acquired him. Do you think TO would have worked in a parcells team? how about Farve? he isn't coachable.

there is a big differance in the players the remained after the purge of last year.

Other coaches do look at the same things but parcells looks a lot deeper.

I didn't explain myself well enoough
