Ben Maller's NFL rumorsby FS

Another week, another former Bill Parcells quarterback who may be joining the Dolphins. A source said Thursday that the Dolphins have reached out to the agent of quarterback Chad Pennington, who was released Thursday afternoon by the Jets following the Brett Favre trade. Last week, former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter was brought to Davie for a private try-out with the Dolphins, though he left town without a contract. On Thursday, in an interview with CBS reporter Lesley Visser, Parcells did not deny having an interest in Pennington. "I never rule out anything," Parcells said, "but what people have to realize about Miami is where in this world we are right now. We're trying to build this team preferably with young players that could maybe grow up together, and by the time we're finished, we hope we have a pretty good product and that the maturing didn't take that long." -- Palm Beach Post

This makes me think they will take a long look at him like they did Carter, but in the end they wont sign him.

It's something I've been saying all along. I could see the team doing their due diligence but the end in mind still remains, this season is just a stepping stone. This league is not just about winning this season it's about building something that wins for years.

Well McCown isnt exactly a young player himself, so why do we have him?

Parcell's also uses the word preferably. I think he signs Pennington who could help develope our Chad. Its like saying I preferred to have married Jessica Alba but I'll have to take what i can get.

not sure reading that just says they would like to keep it young but if they have to get someone to lead for a bit until the youngster is ready (henne) then we will do so.

I've always been a huge advocate of keeping draft picks, drafting the right players, and being able to retain those players. Because, "the team that grows up together, learns to win together." But, this team desn't have a lot of those young draft picks to work with, or those guys are mostly unproven. So, until then... the Dolphins will have to lean on some veteran players.

I am willing to bet that they DO in fact sign him. "Never rule out anything" is a blatant sign, not to mention Pennington can help "mature" and groom the young qb's until they're ready. Of course you want to build your team with young players but if you have a chance to add a good mentor to a position that has been sorely lacking since Marino you just can't pass that up

Well McCown isnt exactly a young player himself, so why do we have him?

We drafted a young QB who the FO believes is the guy for the future in Henne. On top of that all you need is a stop gap till he is ready. Thats McCown's role or Pennington's if he is signed. I really believe John Beck is in trouble here folks.

I think a perfect example of that is Brett Favre and the Green Bay packers, that is a pretty young O in all. There is nothing wrong with having 1 or 2 Vets helping the younger guys and showing them what it takes. You just dont want a whole group of old men.

Who would you rather Henne learn behind.....McClown or Pennington? No brainer!

It is called rebuilding my friend and that is exactly what we are doing. It just takes time.

It's a responce to a reporter by bill about penningtion. How often does bill say anything to anyone. This offseason Bill has been tight lipped as a clam. The fact that he felt the need to say this to a reporter when asked about interest about pennington, is very interesting.

Bill said "I never rule out anything," this was to keep his options open and to due his due dilligence. Then he said "but what people have to realize about Miami is where in this world we are right now. We're trying to build this team preferably with young players that could maybe grow up together, and by the time we're finished, we hope we have a pretty good product and that the maturing didn't take that long."

He is showing the vision he wants for this team. Winning a few games now is not as important to winning a lot games later.
