Chris Shashaty is spot on in this article
One thing about head coach Tony Sparano that makes him the tonic this franchise needs is that he holds his people (and himself) accountable for their work. This goes equally for players and coaches.
The latest case in point is OG Justin Smiley, whom Sparano recently benched in favor of Nate Garner. The reason? Lack of performance.
This brings us to the coaching staff. At the end of last season, Sparano canned offensive line coach Mike Maser because he felt Maser wasn't an effective teacher or communicator. Was Maser capable? Absolutely. But the guy wasn’t getting the job done, so Sparano let him go.
This year, defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni could be the coach on the hot seat.
Why is that?
His defense is a below average 19th overall....12th against the run (and heading south with the loss of NT Jason Ferguson) and 23rd against the pass. Only five teams have surrendered more passes of 20 yards or longer, and they are dead last in 4th quarter points allowed and in yards per completion.
In all fairness, Pasqualoni has been hamstrung with a rebuilt secondary. That's partly on GM Jeff Ireland and his personnel people, especially with regards to the ill-advised Gibril Wilson signing and letting Renaldo Hill go.
But Pasqualoni is accountable as well because he has exacerbated the problem by leaving rookie corners Sean Smith and Vontae Davis alone in one-on-one coverage versus the best wide receivers in the game.
Predictably, the results have been disastrous.
With the loss of Ferguson, wouldn’t the Dolphins be better off in a 4-3 set where Randy Starks, Tony McDaniel, and Paul Soliai could be used at DT in a manner more conducive to their talents? With the exception of Soliai, none of the remaining tackles are true nose guards, and Soliai isn’t yet consistent in the role.
In a 4-3, Taylor would move up to his old weakside DE job where he does good work; this would help get Wake on the field more at OLB. Quentin Moses is capable of playing DE in the 4-3, while Kendall Langford and Phillip Merling could rotate on the strongside.
At LB, Channing Crowder has played the Mike position many times in the past as Zach Thomas’s understudy. Wake and Porter would be the logical choices at the Sam and Will positions, though Porter probably isn’t fast enough. But Charlie Anderson is, with Ayodele, Moses, and Reggie Torbor in reserve. And while Wake isn’t consistent yet versus the run in a 3-4, wouldn’t he do better in a 4-3 where he isn’t as exposed?
Thus far, Pasqualoni’s reluctance to make these (or any) meaningful changes is perplexing. It has also been ruinous. He just doesn’t have the guys right now to make the 3-4 work.

I hope he is on the hot seat and the fins get crennel...

not a bad analysis... I have been disappointed by the lack of creative blitz packages... still cannot fathom that Wake Porter and Taylor can't see the field together more.... earlier in the season they were using Jones effectively on the blitz...

Well this is kind of what you would expect from a guy who has no real defensive experience. You must adapt to the talent you have and he has as the article pointed out is reluctant to change.

I wondered why Miami did at least try to switch to a 4-3 alignment after Furg went down but I guess I was afraid to say it out loud. It is a good short term solution to the NT problem.

Good points in the article especial the point about Wilson and Hill that was just a dumb signing.

If we are playing with Taylor with his hand on the ground we are not really gaining on it. So to make the run defense tops that puts a Merling and Lankford on the outside and a Starks and Staoli on the inside. Taylor play OLB with a rotation of Porter and Wake on the outside. Crowder inside with perhaps Tobor. Anderson could be sprinkled in on running downs. Now we like to rotate our line which is the real question here who are the backups. McDaniel is the only real quality backup to spell anybody. Baker did show up at the Bills game but that is not a given and the only other guy is Francis a recent signing who is probably not ready to go. Dotson is injured remember. I also have a very stong sneaking suspension that Paul Soliai is not healthy at all. We just do not have enough bodies to play it right with a rotation at all. We have plenty of LB's who are fairly decent and I would be rotating the hell our of them to keep them fresh.

This is a really good point...

I would have loved to see more exotic blitzes as well...

The Saints game we blitzed well early but have gotten away from it..

We were saftey blizting and were looking good...

Switching to a 43 full time would be a waste as our Ends have been playing real well..

I dont see Randy playing as well in the role of a 3 tech in a 43.......Tony might be too tall to play a dt in a 43 too..

I dont know how JT would hold up in run support ..Plus Joey is kind of a fish out of water playing Sam..

Wake could not play sam either..he is awful in space..

The problem is they cant not get pressure with 4..

Its not gonna change this season..they need a great pass rusher..

They will get one in the next draft..

Prolly our first round pick

haven't we been lacking the right personnel for the 3-4 defense since we TURNED into a 3-4 defense under Saban? why is that u ask?

BC WE KEEP GETTING OLD GEEZERS TO FILL ROLES OF NT and LBS!!!

Good article but I don't like Wake as an OLB in a 4-3. I would rotate him with Taylor, Merling and Langford at the DE position. Soliai, Starks, Mcdaniel and Baker could rotate at the 2 DT spots. Get Crowder as the MLB with Torbor as his backup and Anderson, Porter, Ayodele and Walden as OLBs...

No body was complaing about the 34 last year when Joey had 17 sacks...

He was the main reason that drove our d..

Same way Dumbervil is driving the Broncos..

When Joey didnt show up last year we struggled..Except for a few games...

Both Jets game...

The 2nd pats game as well..

Losing Vonnie was big.. but glad we did not resign him as Starks was a waste on the bench for the money he got..

He could have maybe played on Langfords side but then you spur his devlopment..

We need a NT..who will be disruptive every down..Losing Ferg was big..

I def liked What Ryan Baker did on the Nose last week..but dont know if he could do it full time..

Paul has not been getting it done...We have been ran all over since he got the Nod...

Pats ran all over us as well as the Bills did kinda too..

I'd be concerned about the LBs in a 4-3. OK Crowder could pass for a MLB, he might even do a decent job. Who else though? I have a lot of doubt about sticking Porter, JT, or Wake at 4-3 LB. I might be more willing to try Anderson or Torber. I think JT could do OK, maybe kick some arse at DE again. I wonder how Wake would do at DE.

Isn't this just a blogger's opinion? I didn't see an official media member's name (which could be a good thing)

I can come up with a better and longer reasoning for firing Dan Henning....you guys act like this came from an even remotely credible source.....
