I haven't seen anyone post anything on what they believe to be the best OL combo... Of course, I could have missed it. If so, my apologies.

But here goes...

While its just been one semi-meaningful Preseason game... and not to be overly knee-jerk in my reaction, but have you guys noticed a fall off in Brandon Alberts' play?

Actually, speaking I noticed it prior to this third game, but I was willing to chalk it up to just him being less concerned with the preseason.

But... perhaps a lead-in..

I think most would agree that in order for an OL to be decent in run blocking, it is crucial that we have guys who can get to the second and third level and at least put a hat on someone..

However, if you watch our 4 left tackles block it appears that they've been coached to get to the second level and then to look for someone to block. The problem though seems to be that thats all they do!

We saw guys get to the second level and then look clueless. We'd see two of our guys against two of theirs and BOTH of ours would let their guys by them without even touching them! That's just identifying responsibilities and perhaps is something that could easily be coached up. Your interior guys (Guards and Centers) have that built-in mentality of getting body-to-body, whereas a tackle typically tries to keep his guy at arms length.

And I think that's our problem with the running game. Too many Tackles. They get to the second level and by nature don't get a hat on anyone.

That brings me to the point of this post:

Brandon Albert has looked like crap. He looks slow and reaching. He's never been a second level guy. At least not for us. I think its time for the old man to move out of the way and the kid to take over.

If that happens (and by the way I predict it will by the mid part of the season- through attrition or merit) then what becomes the best combination of linemen?

Here's my future line prediction and my CURRENT best five (left to right) and why:

Tunsil, Pouncey, Steen, Bushrod, James

Tunsil, I believe to be an upgrade on Albert even at this point of both of their careers. Pouncey, as much as he'd hate being out of his preferred position would represent an upgrade to Tunsil at the G position. Steen has the look of a quality Center but could use the calming presence of a Pouncey next to him for calls etc. Bushrod becomes the weak link but beats the alternatives so far. James stays where he's at.

This line gives us a 3-2 ratio (as opposed to 4-1) natural pass blockers to run blockers (read quality second level blockers) and yet still gives us great flexibility. Heck, we still have 3 guys in that line-up that have played tackle! (sorry...Bushrod's a Tackle, hence the 3-2 ratio).

I believe this to be our best line now and in the near future. And unfortunately, with Albert's age and declining skill-set an inevitability.. Needless to say, we need a healthy Pouncey back.

Your thoughts?...

Mike Pouncey played guard in 2014. He was the worst OL on Miami's roster at that time.

Steen also got abused a few times in run blocking last game.

Albert has a history of dogging it in preseason. It's not a new thing for him.

Albert is LT. Not gonna change. Everyone needs to accept that. Move on. We can have a theoretical debate on this, but it will be THEORETICAL!!!!

As for who starts, I keep going back to Gase's initial statement . . . "the best five will start." Not, "the best five at their position." Not "the best two guards and best two tackles." The "best five." Fans may not agree. Fans may see some disadvantages in the plan, BUT that's Gase's philosophy and that's why the five starters are there. Any discussion ignoring these two certainties is ignoring reality.

Am expecting Albert's play to improve in real games especially with Tunsil rather than Thomas manning the LG spot.

Our running game will get better with more familiarity at the G position from Tunsil and Bushrod. And we better pray for Albert to stay healthy, otherwise this line might resort back to Dallas Thomas at LG and...well, we better pray Albert stays healthy.

Albert will play at a high level. He has been "beat up" by his own admission. He has over two weeks to rest up and get healthy as I doubt he plays more than a series this week.

I want to see Steen get a shot at starting RG. If he can play that good as a first time center, he has to be a top option at his normal position.

The #1 priority this year is to protect RT17 for once. If that means Bushrod over a better run blocker then so be it. I still see Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner get pushed back into the pocket way to often. If we have to counter with the short passing game to the RB to make up for poor run blocking, then that's what we need to do. We will likely be among league leaders in HB passing attempts anyway.

On a positive note, Ju'Wuan James was quietly outstanding the last game against Atlanta. He may have had a pretty good match-up with Vic Beasley, but James ate him up.

James was steady at RT when a rook but they flipped him to LT when Albert got hurt. He was bad enough at LT that I don't want to see him there again. Last year, he was hurt and missed the second half.

It would be great if he made a jump up and became one of the better RT's in the league. He has a good attitude and was drafted in the first round to resolve a problem position. Let's hope he realizes his potential this year.

On Albert, I am not going to panic until he is bad in the regular season. He has always been a consummate pro. The guy played very banged up last year and was solid.

I've read plenty of people's opinion on the best offensive line combination all offseason, not sure if there was an actual thread dedicated to it. I am going to trust whomever the coaches decide to put out there based on their play in practice/games. They see them a lot more often than we do, so I'll trust their opinion.

In due course, I think. Or hope

This is actually better, imo. Think about it, the biggest problem with this team is pass-protection. If it is improved... great. It is a lot easier to run block.

It looks like its a done deal albert tunsil pouncey or steen bushrod and james week 1 starting oline

I think its a wrap

Jay Ajayi would be on a short leash if I was HC. He needs to show ASAP that he has the required vision to run behind this line. Otherwise I am rolling with Foster and Pead....unless by some miracle Drake shows he can run between the tackles.

Honestly I think our best option, if we want more push in the run game is to remove James from the starting lineup. In that scenario I'd probably kick Bushrod out to tackle, and put a mauler like Turner next to him. I feel like that's a good enough protection OL, but has a little more upside in the run game.

Fat Albert and his junkyard band of ****ty linemen. We'll see if he was dogging it in preseason or the ass raping that OV put on him will be the new norm.

Thanks for the response. I wasn't necessarily looking for a "theoretical" discussion in my OP... However, since you've alluded to it. If Albert went down, what "best five" would you start and where?

Also, you may note that I did in fact state that my group of five; I also called my "CURRENT best five". And did so, so as to preempt any "best five should start" conversation. Albeit my justification included a positional breakdown. That being said, I still have Bushrod starting even though he's playing out of his historical position.

You also mention "these two certainties"... but I only see the one mentioned. ("the best five"). Was there a second I missed? Thanks, again.
