Pat Summerall, the legendary NFL play-by-play man who worked a record 16 Super Bowls, has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports.

He began working for CBS in 1961 and stayed there for 31 years before moving to Fox for the final eight years of his career.

Summerall spent much of his time honing a fantastic chemistry with the most famous football analyst in history, John Madden, and tributes have begun pouring in on social media from those who associate Summerall with the big-time football games of their youth.

RIP Pat...one of the true NFL broadcast icons indeed.

I associate him with my youth. And not merely football, but the Masters and US Open tennis. He was high caliber and class in every one.

Weird, I don't think of him with Madden at all. I literally doubletaked when I read that segment of your post. To me it's Summerall and Brookshier, wisecracking in the cold. They had a fantastic relaxed attitude, while also conveying the significance of the game.

Keep in mind that was the rival network, CBS. The Dolphins and all of the AFC were on NBC in that '70s era. In the rare circumstance of the Dolphins playing on CBS and broadcast by Summerall and Brookshier, it was always a big deal when the CBS guys demonstrated knowledge of your little team. You felt proud, like you meant something.

I remember that Summerall was more kind to us than he needed to be in the Super Bowl rout by Dallas.

I knew the name before I linked him to television. In the elementary school library I found the book The Frank Gifford Story and read it time and again. Summerall was mentioned many times in that book, along with other Giants players during Gifford's era of the '50s and early '60s.

Yeah Summerall was a good guy ,always liked him. Sad news, RIP.

Can't believe it, besides Harry Caray this is the first real sportscaster I can legitimately remember who has passed. He was the announced in some of the old Madden games, back when Madden actually seemed cool and not the product you were saddled with this year because there were no alternatives (not that I have bought it all that frequently).

R.I.P. What a shame. I also disagree with this being moved, only because I think he had such a great impact on all teams. If we can have 50 different threads about our logo, it's a relief to see a thread honoring someone like this

RIP Pat! As really you were a class act my friend!
