Path to the Draft: Dorsey dreams of Fins selecting him

The forgotten one.

The more film I watch on Dorsey, the more I think he'll be an excellent nose tackle in the 3-4. The guy can hold his ground and is EXCELLENT in shedding his blocker and making the tackle when the RB runs inside. Excellent run blocker.

Dorsey or Gholston please.

Everyone is so hung up on whether or not Dorsey is a 3-4 player or a 4-3 player but the simple answer is that he is the best PLAYER in the draft. A number of scouts were hung up on whether or not Richard Seymour was a 4-3 tackle when the Patriots took him, that seems to have worked out. The same was said about Luis Castillo when he was drafted by the Chargers. Like both of them, I don’t think Dorsey will end up a NT for the Dolphins or whoever takes him. I think he will start at one of the End spots, which is really a tackle in a 3-4 anyway, always lining up inside the OTs or as a tackle in a 4-3. Dorsey lined up over the guard or in the ‘B’ gap frequently at LSU, but he also pushed out as wide as head up ove rthe tackle on a few occassions. His size and burst make him very capable of playing 3-4 end. On obvious passing downs Dorsey will move inside even further and never leave the field. Dorsey is a beast, one of the best DL coming out of college in the last decade. Quality players make things happen, we shouldn’t be so hung up on how tall or short a player is supposed to be…Dwight Freeney was too short to be an effective end, John Henderson was too tall to be an effective 4-3 tackle. This pick would single handedly improve the defense and free up the OLB playing behind him (no wonder Jason Taylor wants them to take Dorsey).

I cannot help myself.. this is the guy "I" want. Like you, I don't think all the arguing over 4-3 3-4 means anything. He is a FORCE and can play all across the line, and imo, meets our greatest need on defense.. stopping the run. He is capable of providing the "most feared" rush to the qb.. up the middle. No qb plays well if there is pressure coming up the middle. I understand CL will sell more jerseys, and nothing but joy will come from me if we chose Chris.. but I want the big eater.

OT: Once again good to see chime in Marty. We definitely see eye to eye on the run stopping problem, and while we did sign Furgeson, he is not the long term answer.
If we don't pick Dorsey, I expect we take a very good look at perhaps Red Brayant in a later round

Sure he does. What's the $guaranteed difference between 1 and 2-5 these day??? Last year he would have said "Al Davis and the Silver & Black" dontcha think?

Stripping out the BS sentimentality, he is a good player and I'd support Tuna's decision so long as the docs who thumbs-up his durabilty aren't the same ones who examined Dullpepper and Brees.

He could be a very effective 3 Technique at end in the 3-4, but his best fit is in the 4-3. He just doesn't fit our scheme well enough to justify us taking him # 1 overall. Combined with the fact, there is not enough value in a 3-4 end to take them with a top pick. They are mostly used ase space eating run stuffers and rarely get to the QB, so using the #1 pick on that position would be a waste, especially when you are paying all that money to just a run stuffer.

It's funny you say that, I don't agree. For example, I think that Richard Seymour has been the defensive MVP of the Patriots for the last 7 years and is the player 2nd most responsible for their success, behind Brady. He is a college 4-3 DT who shifted to 3-4 end in the pros and, hindsight being 20-20, is well worth the number #1 pick in the draft.

There was a part of me that thought the reason we were going so hard for Pace was because Dorsey was our intended pick. I don't know if his signing with the Jets changes that or even if it was ever the case.

All the injury talk around Dorsey scares me. I know he's shown he can play through pain, but with all the concerns that have been brought up about old tibia injuries etc, I don't think you can justify paying him as the first overall pick.

That's just too much of a financial commitment to make to a 300lb player, who could potentially have chronic injury issues.

Valid point. Any interest in Dorsey would be assuming he has checked out medically.
