I'm as steamed over the NO game as anyone else but we have to remember that we are in a rebuilding process and this is going to take time.
Nobody predicted the AFC East Championship last season and this has made expectations unrealistically high.
Reviewing the team right now we are about 60% of the way there. The Offence needs Henne to bed in and gain experience the rest of the season but I like what I see and I think he can be at the very least a steady NFL Quarterback. I like his poise and ability to make all the throws and if you switch all those drops against NO then he has good numbers for a rookie going against two of the better NFL teams.
The major needs remaining for the Offence are a legit #1 receiver and a legit threat at TE (look at what Clark, Gates, Gonzales and now Shockey have done against us) to help Henne. Jermaine Gresham is the guy I like but again its not going to happen so we need to find a diamond in the rough somewhere. Fasano is too slow and inconsistent and I'd even consider letting him walk in FA.
And heres some more controversy, Ted Ginn has a future on this team. He needs to be the full time returner AND the slot guy/#3 which means we get rid of either Camarillo or Bess as they are basically the same. I'd try and get something for Camarillo as Bess is younger. If we can somehow get Vincent Jackson that would be the jackpot but I don't see BP comitting the necessary $$$ for him and in any event I don't see SD letting him go.
Henne will likely be better by next season and if we can establish some form of passing threat allied to our dominant ground game then we should be ready to challenge.
Now the bad news...
Defence is a concern and if I were Parcells/Ireland I'd spend every pick on getting the D younger starting with Linebackers. Say we got Rolando McClain in the first and Micah Johnson in the second MLB should be set for years and these guys can contribute from the get go. I'd dump Ayodele and pair McClain with Crowder with Johnson learning the ropes. McClain seems to be the QB of his defence and paired with a thumper like Johnson MLB would be a position of strength. McClain also seems to excel in coverage which has been our achilles heel thus far as regards covering TE's.
I'm hoping Wake can develop into a starter and we can find an OLB somewhere in round 2 or 3 to groom, thereafter its BPA in a defensive context with the priority being NT and depth elsewhere.
Can Jason Ferguson hold it down in 2010/11?, he's already said he'll retire if BP doesnt offer him a contract and whilst improved Soliai is not the long-term answer - biggest (literally) pair of shoes here to fill and of course the 3-4 won't work with a dominant NT.
CB is set or will be when Smith and Davis click but depth is needed. Its clear that signing Gibril Wilson over say Darren Sharper was a mistake and this needs to be corrected probably by moving Wilson on.
One more draft/FA period is not going to fill all these holes and bear in mind that our currently young O gets older the longer it takes but that's the trick of rebuilding a franchise.
If we can get a good draft of quality linebackers then I think Miami absolutley have to make a splash in FA and sign a premier WR and or NT to keep the momentum going. For example say we got McClain AND Johnson for ILB and a promising OLB we need to sign the best NT our there for it all to work. Likewise for teams to fear our Offence we need a premier #1. For me a WR corp of the following would be the dream come true...
Jackson
Bess
Ginn
Hartline
Turner
Remember Parcells said we'd likely regress after year one but if we finish 6-10 we strengthen the draft position and with the Trifecta in charge you can be sure they will hit with most of the picks.
