The Dolphin have a star in training camp that no one is talking about. He's a shifty running back with great hands, quick feet, strong legs and an intelligent brain between his ears. He's versatile, he has a low center of gravity, he's tough and he's as explosive as they come. His name is Patrick Cobbs.
Only having 19 grabs and 12 carries on the year, you might not remember Pat Cobbs as a "star". But you certainly remember Cobbs from the Texans game last year when he caught 3 balls for 138 yards, taking 2 to the house for scores. In that game, Cobbs showed you his ability to make a big play, and it is an ability that I'm sure the coaching staff is trying to showcase more this season.
Cobbs is not only effective because of his talent, but also for another reason. That reason being the fact that the opposing defense will rarely account for him. Think about it, when the Dolphins line up renowned playmakers like Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Anthony Fasano, with Ginn and Bess on the outside, the defensive coordinator is not often going to be worrying about Patrick Cobbs in the backfield or in the slot.
I know I might be gushing a bit much about Cobbs, but I think that he can be a very valuable piece to our puzzle here. Especially since Ronnie Brown is prone to getting nicked up and missing a couple games over the course of the year.
I'm very excited about this offense going forward, I wish we were a little better at receiver, but I think we might just have one too many weapons for a defense to defend. With a smart guy like Pennington as the point guard of this offense taking the next step this year, I really think that we can see a very dynamic offense.
Let's just hope that what's happening to the Eagles doesn't start happening to us... I'm talking of course about their deleterious injury issues.

He made huge plays for us last year, and I would expect to see more this year. I think towards the end of the year you'll see more of Cobbs than Williams. Brown and Cobbs will give us a nice duo of backs for some years to come.

As a third back he did good but I dont think he could ever be a main back in the nfl.

I agree. I wouldnt be surprised if Ricky didnt perform and he ended up taking the remaining carries

I agree. Patrick Cobbs is an important piece of our offense. He can make plays when called upon and is probably the best 3rd RB in the league, IMO.

Are you serious??? You really think Ricky will not perform? And Cobbs was a the rushing leader how many times??? Dont get me wrong Cobbs is good but to think he will be as taking time from Ricky just has me scratching my head. :ponder:

My sarcasm alarm just went off...what happened???

He's fine. I like Cobbs. But to call him a "weapon" is a bit..well...

Look when he caught the TD pass from Penny on the flea flicker.

He might as well have fair caught it.

I love Cobbs, but, c'mon. He's a 3rd string back for a reason.

maybe you have heard about RONNIE BROWN and RICKY WILLIAMS 1st nd 2nd runnning backs in this team

Before the 2007 season I came down to Fort Lauderdale for a vacation with my brother and a friend. While they spent the week exploring south florida for the first time, I spent everyday in Davie. My one really vivid memory of that training camp was telling my brother just how good Ronnie Brown looked and that this RB I thought was just TC fodder, Patrick Cobbs, could do everything.

I really thought nothing of it during the 2007 season because Cobbs wasn't really apart of it. Obviously Ronnie was having a stellar campaign before his injury. But last season when I saw Cobbs making plays, I was like, I knew it. I knew he was more than just another back.

He'll maximize his reps again this year.

Nice write up.

I agree I too like Cobbs.

It might be hard for him to see signifigant playing time in '09 with Ricky and Ronnie but when he does see playing time he performs.
