I read that Patrick Cobbs ran a 4.7 in the 40 at one campus workout, and that's why he went undrafted. Apparently that slow time was on a rainy, windy day, and Cobbs later ran a 4.5 in the 40, but for whatever reason, that time was ignored by the scouts.

Watching him on the field, Cobbs definitely seems fast. And my guess is that if he had been invited to the official NFL combine, and ran indoors for the scouts, he would have run closer to 4.5, and gotten drafted. What do you think?

Some videos of Patrick Cobbs, and his game speed..

I think because he's so small, he looks a lot faster than he is. He certainly isn't 4.7 slow, but he can be caught from behind.

It doesn't matter now. What matters is that Cobbs is a good, solid, and reliable contributer to the Miami Dolphins. I'm glad that he is here. That's all that matters.

Cobbs is a very reliable RB. What I like the most about him are his hands. He has great hands and catch line up wide and get into the secondary where he can punish defenders.

I also think the 40 times is a little overrated, but is a good tool to use to gauge speed. I think the best way to gauge how fast a player really is in on film. How often does the guy get caught in the open field.

I think Jerry Rice ran a 4.5 or something close, but no one could catch him from behind in the NFL. Just my two cents.

I'm guessing it has something to do with RB's with that type of body and that slow 40 time propably havent done much in the NFL. Good for us sucks for everyon else.

Jerry may have run slower than a 4.5 but he definitely had game speed in the NFL. Seeing him in college was quite entertaining as well. The team he was on, Mississippi Valley State, averaged about 70 points per game one season. Most of that was throught the air. Their QB, Willie Totten, broke NCAA records and went undrafted....

Cobbs is a great football player. This guy just knows how to get a job done on the field, whatever his job is. But as a scout, I can really understand why there would be doubts as to his talent. Even now, we're still discussing a third stringer, and he is a guy who is never going to be a starting RB unless a team has severe injury problems. And he also doesn't have elite speed, which a lot of third down running backs have. This is what the scouts saw.

But there are a lot of guys who have the tools but are out of the league in a couple years because they don't execute. Patrick Cobbs, on the other hand, is extraordinarily reliable. We run this guy out there for trick plays and pass plays because you know he is just going to make something happen.

He wasn't drafted because he has poor balance, agility and power. As much as I love what he is done, he isn't very much. He has done exactly what has been asked of him; getting the ball and catching the defense off guard that he got the ball. He hasn't made plays happen when he gets the ball, just he has been a "look they gave the 3rd down backup blocker the ball." Off the top of my head, I can't recall a single tackle broken or avoided by Cobbs.

He fits perfectly at catching Ds off guard, but not much more then that.

He's never going to be a #1 running back - just doesn't have the speed (or size to make up) for it. His top-end speed is not impressive, but he's got decent acceleration and pretty good vision. An excellent change of pace back. Sort of like how Davone Bess will never be anything more than a slot receiver...but you can count on his hands and his effort.

I like this guy so much because he gets football
He manages to get all his ability translated to the game and not being the most gifted athlete makes it that much more special. Some other players have so much god given ability and NEVER measure up because they lack heart and desire.Patrick does not have that problem.

Some players need a heart transplant others do not...
