Patrick Surtain's last year as Phin ?

You couldn't get Tomlinson for our whole defense anyway. Even if the teams agreed on a talent level, the cap implications would probably require that each team field a roster with maybe 24 rookies on it. No, I don't mean 24 rookies with veterans fulling the rest of the roster -- I mean 24 rookies as the whole roster.

IF Surtain stays healthy, he will retire a Dolphin. The front office would be foolish to let him go.

I would agree, but I would caution all of you that we really don't have a good picture of whether Surtain is healthy or not. Games started are a pretty good measure, but it's not absolute. We know that a Shawn Springs or a Fred Taylor would miss when hurt, but we also know that there are tough guys out there like Ronnie Lott who will get part of a finger cut off to play. Even if that doesn't describe Pat, degenerative knee conditions can be brutal. Ask TD how his time in Denver ended.

Something that should be remembered is it was Drew Rosenhaus that said Surtain had a degenerative knee condition. Surtain then denied the report.

Drew is not always right and in this case I think he was assuming.

Releasing or trading Surtain next year would save $5.850 million on the cap and cost just $2.231 million of dead money.

As of right now I don't see him going anywhere but anything can happen. We have three starting WRs now two of which cost nothing to trade. I think one of them goes before Surtain.

Trading Pat would be a BIG mistake for the future of this team, he is easily in the top 5 at his postion and he is a great character guy in the locker room, our defense has 4 guys that are not tradable JT, Zach Thomas,Tim Bowens and Pat Surtain...these guys are leaders on Defense , thats all i have to say

phinfactor,

Bowens may not be tradable, but it is looking more and more like he is done. I would tend to agree that trading away a reasonably healthy Surtain would be folly, but I could see the team making a Sapp/Lynch sort of decision, particularly if Tim does have to be replaced anyway.

Pat is my favorite Dolphin. I would hate to see him go for nothing. I would think some team would be willing to give up some major goods for him. But all things considered I'd like to see him stay.

Football needs a "Larry Bird" Rule, so you can keep loyal long time players w/o destroying your cap.
