Pats bounce Banta-Cain

Posted by Mike Florio on October 19, 2009 5:52 PM ET
A day after the Patriots created a widespread case of head scratching by deactivating linebacker Adalius Thomas, the Pats have sent fingers back to scalps throughout the football-watching world by cutting linebacker Tully Banta-Cain.

Per a league source, the Pats cuts the veteran defender on Monday.

"New England cutting him doesn't make sense," the source said. "He was playing pretty well for them."

Banta-Cain was drafted by the Patriots in 2003. He signed with the 49ers in 2007. San Fran cut him in February 2009, and he re-signed a week later with the Patriots.

He appeared in all six regular-season games, starting twice.

Because the trade deadline has not passed, Banta-Cain will not pass through waivers. However, he'll be entitled to collect the remainder of his $620,000 base salary as termination pay, even if he signs with another team.

UPDATE: Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News actually had this news posted a few minutes before us, so failure to give him credit for being first to the party could trigger an episode of bad karma. Archer raises the point from the perspective of whether it makes sense for the Cowboys to pursue him.

he is 29 yrs old and has actually played pretty decent for the Pats...would you guys take a look at him?

Wow....very interesting move. He seems to be pretty good for them, certainly seems better than Anderson is for us! I think he projects to OLB in a 3-4? I wonder how he'd be on ST.

I'm surprised they weren't able to trade him to the Eagles or Bengals.

Looks like Pats have something big in the works for tomorrow. I'm sensing a blockbuster move.

maybe the Patsies are making room for Shawn Merriman?

Seau is a role player. TBC already had 3 sacks for them this year - he's not a guy you cut for Seau. I just don't see that.

It's obvious - they feel Brady is back and that they're on their way to the Super Bowl to right the wrongs of 2008. This is re-arming for the run, and we all know they've got the picks to do it.

As for TBC, he's not a bad player and certainly better than some of our LB depth.

No way they cut him now before they even have the trade done....think you guys are too worried about nothing.

If it is a Merriman deal....go for it. The guy has been garbage since he got busted for roids and blowing the knee.

Hope you're right man, but I really don't see how they couldn't get a draft pick out of Philly or Cincy for him. They were in a rush to cut him. Whether the trade was done already or not is sort of semantics...

Anyways, might not be Merriman.

merrimen sucks. whats he done since getting hurt? i hate him more than anyone else in the nfl.

Could be every Pats fan's wet dream - Peppers.
