FOXBORO - Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour is expected to return to practice this afternoon, one year to the day after he ended his holdout.
The timing isn’t a coincidence. On the physically unable to perform list since the start of camp, a source yesterday said Seymour and the team agreed to sideline him until the four-year extension he agreed to this winter could become official.
Because of a rule prohibiting multiple renegotiations of a contract within a calendar year, Seymour can’t sign his extension until today. He was granted a one-year raise last August to end his holdout, then reached a four-year, $30 million deal this winter.
Once he signs that contract, he’ll be cleared to join his teammates.
The Patriots may not want to rush. With temperatures expected to push 100 degrees this afternoon, there’d be no harm in delaying Seymour’s return until tomorrow.
Lmao Some Injury that was!
