Just to change the subject for a minute but does anyone have a clue or any ideas what is happening with this guy Paul Solai? He looked like our steal of the draft last year in the 4th round as a DT and he hardly ever played a down. Is he just a bust that is going to be dumped or is there any news out there about him having a chance to make the team this year. He is a big guy and "could" fit into the BIll Parcells system just becuase of that.

Do you mean Paul Solai? He is a work in progress but will get pretty good playing this year IMO.

Paul SOLIAI has to work on his techniques and get used to the speed on the game. He became frustrated last year when couldn't get his techniques right. In other words he was thinking too much and not reacting.

Size Wise he is a beast, similar mold with Ngata but has to work on getting his technique right. I would like to see him rotate with Fergurson this year.

Correct. That is what I was told also.

Has the tools, just needs to refine them. Probably needs a good TC and preseason to polish them up.

Yah, agree with most of the posters so far, those big guys tend to take some time. His knock coming out of college was consistency, and we witnessed that. At worst he'll be a rotational player on the Dline. He is too big to not keep around in the 3-4. I actually thought he got a little better when he was moved to DE in the 3-4, which is what Ngata plays as well. Especially on running downs.

He can't even beat out Fifita. Fifita played ahead of him at Utah and he is ahead of him in Miami and there may not be room on the roster if Miami drafts Pat Simms or another NT prospect.

Soliai started out in college as an OT. I would like to see him returned to the OL perhaps at OG. They did the same thing with Marquay Love and as far as I know Love is still on the team, but realistically Love is just too short.

Soliai, on the other hand is the same size as Karl Nicks. 6'4" 340 ish. However Soliai is an even better athlete than the highly touted Nicks who has character issues.

I'm not saying Soliai should make the position change and move right in to the starting Gaurd position that is open, but if he could make the roster as a backup he certainly has the size and athleticism to be an NFL OT or OG.

It would just be a darn shame to lose an athlete like this because his college coach made a mistake in moving him in the first place. That is in regard to his NFL career.
He helped Utah on defense where they needed it and played well at the collegiate level at DT.

It's not like the Dolphins are overloaded with OL talent are we?

On the contrary, the Dolphins are in desperate need of OL help, even with the acquisition of Jake Long.

Sparano will know if Paul can transition or not. I just hope they have the guts and the desire to do it with him rather than lose him.

When Soliai was drafted last year, most figured that he was a work in progress. That's exactly what he is. He's got the perfect size for a 3-4 NT, he just needs some better coaching. God knows he didn't have that last year.

Umm dont you mean Paul Soliai?

And i dont know what all of ya'll are talking about, he is listed as an OG on the official team roster:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/teams/roster?team=mia

But he's got a DT's number, so maybe its just a typo???
Ya, it must be cause if you click on his profile it says DT.
I dont know much about him, as you can probably tell, haha.

I think we should give him time to start i think he will be good but who knows

i would entertain seeing him moved to the OL. Would certainly plow some holes for the "RnR Express"

Soliai has the size(350 lbs) and the mobility you look for. After seeing how fast he was in training camp, I was expecting big things from him.

However, he plays with ZERO leverage. The guy stands up, takes a couple of steps, and then gets mauled by 280 pound centers using proper technique. Additionally he was incapable of facing a double team, which is the main requirement for a Nose Tackle.

So, #1 this guy needs to bend and play with leverage. #2 his leg strength has been called in to question as well. #3 He could get a little stronger in the weight room.

****
You can't teach size and speed, and he has them. You can teach a guy to stay low and use his legs to drive through his man... for whatever reason, our new d-line coach last year did not teach him this basic requirement.

I would think that some work with a heavier "football sled" could help him alot.

as was said before, he is a work in progress. he will back up ferguson at nose tackle and have his playing time dependent upon his progress. if he develops it will allow us to play him frequently enough to spell ferguson and keep him fresh.

Yeah. Camoron replaced Dan Quinn (who came to Miami with an established reputation as one of the best d-line coaches in the league) with some young guy (who was a staff or quality control assistant with Indianapolis, who a quadriplegic could have gashed for 100 yards the season before).
