It's Only Happened ONCE!
The Dolphins badly need help at cornerback and there’s a glutton of players who should be available when Miami selects at No. 13 in next week’s NFL draft.
But what happens if none of them are worthy of a high selection?
That’s what worries ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., who believes there’s only one cornerback the Dolphins should consider at No. 13 — and he’s not even sold on him.
“If you’re looking for a corner in the first, you’d be looking at Vernon Hargreaves from Florida, who could be there,” Kiper told reporters on Tuesday.
“He’s a veteran. He’s a confident kid. But I don’t think he’s an elite corner. I think he’s a No. 2 corner. I don’t think he can be a lock-down corner. I don’t think he’s a guy you want on the best receiver of the opposition all the time. But I think he’s a good football player and it makes sense there.”
The problem for the Dolphins it that their only other starting cornerback, Byron Maxwell, may not be a No. 1 corner either.
On the eve of free agency last month, the Dolphins traded the No. 8 pick in the draft to Philadelphia for the No. 13 selection, Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Then the Dolphins released Brent Grimes, a three-time Pro Bowler for Miami who regressed last year but was still easily the team’s top cornerback.
Until last season, Maxwell played second-fiddle to Richard Sherman in Seattle’s zone scheme but was considered a top cornerback in his own right.
Philadelphia signed him to a six-year, $63 million deal and he was a disappointment last season, playing primarily in man coverage.
First-year Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is expected to implement a zone scheme, which should help Maxwell return to form. But it’s still unclear if he’s a true No. 1 cornerback.
