It's Only Happened ONCE!
For the last two seasons the Dolphins have begrudgingly used Jarvis Landry inthe return game.

Landry emerged as one ofthe league’s top punt returners. But it was also an injury risk for the team’sbest receiver.

Now, the Dolphins have newweapons — rookies Jakeem Grant and Kenyan Drake — who should assure that Landrystays away from special teams.

Well, not necessarily.

Special teams coordinatorDarren Rizzi said during last week’s rookie minicamp that Landry hasn’t beenruled out as a returner.

“If he’s our best option, then yes,” said Rizzi of the potential of Landry as a returner.

“I still will always usethe Antonio Brown example. He’s still the Pittsburgh Steelers punt returner andyou could argue he’s their best player. You could argue he’s one of the bestreceivers in the league and he’s still back there returning punts and makinggame-changing plays.”

Rizzi said the thoughtprocess in drafting Drake and was Grant, at least when it comes to specialteams, was “to get more options on the table.”

“We haven’t had a lot ofthem the last couple of years, that’s the bottom line,” he said.

“So at that point Jarviswas our best option. I’d like to think moving forward that guys like Grant andguys like Drake and some other guys we’re bringing in are going to now beoptions for us and now make the decision at the end, ‘Hey, can this guy do itweek one?'”

Translation: If Grant or Drake aren’t excelling as returners inthe preseason, then Landry is still an option. But we’d really like for Grantor Drake to win the job.

If Grant in particulardoesn’t emerge as a returner, it would be a disappointment. He’s a 5-6 receiverwho coach Adam Gase will try to incorporate in to the offense.

But he looks like a playerwho could emerge as a star in the return game.
