For the last two seasons the Dolphins have begrudgingly used Jarvis Landry inthe return game.

Landry emerged as one ofthe league’s top punt returners. But it was also an injury risk for the team’sbest receiver.

Now, the Dolphins have newweapons — rookies Jakeem Grant and Kenyan Drake — who should assure that Landrystays away from special teams.

Well, not necessarily.

Special teams coordinatorDarren Rizzi said during last week’s rookie minicamp that Landry hasn’t beenruled out as a returner.

“If he’s our best option, then yes,” said Rizzi of the potential of Landry as a returner.

“I still will always usethe Antonio Brown example. He’s still the Pittsburgh Steelers punt returner andyou could argue he’s their best player. You could argue he’s one of the bestreceivers in the league and he’s still back there returning punts and makinggame-changing plays.”

Rizzi said the thoughtprocess in drafting Drake and was Grant, at least when it comes to specialteams, was “to get more options on the table.”

“We haven’t had a lot ofthem the last couple of years, that’s the bottom line,” he said.

“So at that point Jarviswas our best option. I’d like to think moving forward that guys like Grant andguys like Drake and some other guys we’re bringing in are going to now beoptions for us and now make the decision at the end, ‘Hey, can this guy do itweek one?'”

Translation: If Grant or Drake aren’t excelling as returners inthe preseason, then Landry is still an option. But we’d really like for Grantor Drake to win the job.

If Grant in particulardoesn’t emerge as a returner, it would be a disappointment. He’s a 5-6 receiverwho coach Adam Gase will try to incorporate in to the offense.

But he looks like a playerwho could emerge as a star in the return game.

The first rule of returning punts is to have a guy that never drops it. In other words, the most important thing is to catch the punt.

Then, it is nice to have a great return guy also.

I don't think Drake or Grant did punt returns in college so i could see Jarvis keeping that job.

Sounds like extra motivation for Grant and Drake. They know their not being handed the key to the PR/KR roles just yet.

I'll attempt to translate what Rizzi is saying here: "I will get hired or fired based on the success of my squad and my squad alone. I frankly want the best people on the field, and don't care where else they are needed. If Landry is far and away the best option, you bet your ass I'm lobbying for him to be on special teams."

Landry is good on the PR but he's not all-world. Yes he had a game winning TD (was at that game and got to see it live - was awesome) - he has some areas in his game that are not great as a PR. For one, he doesn't have breakaway speed - I know he's been productive as have guys like Edelman and Amendola but ideally you want someone w more juice (no pun intended) who's a threat to go the distance every time they field one. Also, Jarvis made a fair amount of questionable decisions to FC or not to FC that put the offense at 1st and 10 inside their 15 or even 10 sometimes. Finally, he's too valuable to the offense to have back there. Anyone recall Troy Vincent (by far our best DB) blowing out his knee running a punt back?

I'd like to see Drake returning punts and Grant returning kicks. Hopefully we have a lot more punt returns than kick off returns.

The plan has to be for the rookies to hold down return duties, so it frees up Landry to focus on offense. Additionally, they have a lot more burst than he does and are more suited for those roles. Drake and Grant are play makers. The more times they touch the ball the better. I suspect that Grant will be a special teams ace as a gunner and punt coverage member as well.

I want them both to feel like they are a part of the team ASAP.

If Landry is still returning kicks and punts then Drake and Grant where even more wasted picks then what they already are.
