Dolphins vice president Mike Tannenbaum hinting that the team is more likely to fill holes through free agency than the draft is an overarching philosophy, but it’s also a practical approach this year.

Miami has two selections in the first two rounds, 22nd and 54th overall, and little after that. Here is the full stock of picks:

1st round: 22nd overall
2nd round: 54th overall (22nd in round)
3rd round: None
4th round: None
5th round: 148th overall (22nd in round)
6th round: 180th overall (22nd in round)
7th round: 211th overall (22nd in round)

That set of picks might improve slightly when the NFL awards compensatory selections, which usually happens near the Combine.

The website Over The Cap projects the Dolphins to get a pick at the end of the third round for losing Olivier Vernon in free agency last year and one at the end of the fifth for losing Lamar Miller. Even if that happens, Miami goes in with a maximum of three of the first 140 picks.

The 3rd round compensatory pick will be #98.

I was having fun with First Pick.com.(mock draft)

Round 1 Pick 22: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama (A+)
Round 2 Pick 22: T.J. Watt, OLB, Wisconsin (A)
Round 3 Pick 34: Jordan Willis, DE, Kansas State (A-)
Round 4 Pick 22: Jaleel Johnson, DT, Iowa (A+)
Round 5 Pick 22: Corn Elder, CB, Miami (Fla.) (A)
Round 6 Pick 22: Eric Saubert, TE, Drake (B+)
Round 7 Pick 22: Zane Gonzalez, K, Arizona State (A+)

No way in hell Tannenbaum doesn't trade us back into the 3rd or 4th.

Not signing Olivier is one of the best moves we've done in recent memory.

Huh?? I'm confused. 32 teams for 3 rounds = 96 spots. How can #98 be a 3rd round pick?

Because other teams will receive a comp pick in the 3rd round as well

Honestly I could see a situation where they move down in the 1st and the 2nd rounds just to get those picks back.

but hey we have Caroo

I still have faith that this was a year in which it was more of a mental issue in having to learn all the routes for all the positions. I am fully expecting a large jump for him in year 2. Separation was never an issue for him in college and he did flash a couple times in the limited reps this year. I know he is an easy guy to dump on but just wait a bit.

Yeah, I get the logic, but the math isn't there. #98 is the 2nd pick in R4.

no comp picks come at the end of round 3 so say we have the 5th comp pick we'd have pick 101...the 4th round starts after the comp picks...then it's 4th round comp picks etc... and on and on

I would love for the Browns to pass on a QB at 1 and 12, then have a guy like Watson fall to us at 22. The Browns love trading for that #22 pick to take a QB (Weeden and Manziel). Give me the 1st and 20th picks in the 2nd round and call it even

Tannabaum better get it done in Free agency cause he has been a poor performer in the draft when you study the history
