It's Only Happened ONCE!
One of coach’s toughest jobs is deciding whether to stick with a unproven player after his miscues or bench him. For Adam Gase, it was a pretty easy call on Jakeem Grant.
Grant muffed three punts in the Dolphins’ win at San Diego last weekend and made a bad decision on a kick return that cost Miami some field position, but Gase immediately stood up for him and said there was no question he’d keep his job as a returner.
“Because we all know how effective he can be when things are going right,” Gase said after practice Friday. “Sometimes it takes a game like that to realize what you can do and what you can’t do. Obviously, when he had that dropped punt return, that was a great example of he had a long way to travel. The guy had a great punt, and he has got to let that one go. That’s a learning experience for him.
“He’s got to learn from that, but at the same time, I have a lot of confidence in the fact that when he does catch the ball and gets going, he has actually got a chance to score. When you have a guy like that, he’s going to have as many opportunities as possible to return balls, whether it’s on kickoff or punt return.”
Grant, a rookie, was hard on himself after the game and made no excuses. He spent extra time catching punts after practices this week to sharpen his attention to watch the ball all the way into his hands.
