One of coach’s toughest jobs is deciding whether to stick with a unproven player after his miscues or bench him. For Adam Gase, it was a pretty easy call on Jakeem Grant.

Grant muffed three punts in the Dolphins’ win at San Diego last weekend and made a bad decision on a kick return that cost Miami some field position, but Gase immediately stood up for him and said there was no question he’d keep his job as a returner.

“Because we all know how effective he can be when things are going right,” Gase said after practice Friday. “Sometimes it takes a game like that to realize what you can do and what you can’t do. Obviously, when he had that dropped punt return, that was a great example of he had a long way to travel. The guy had a great punt, and he has got to let that one go. That’s a learning experience for him.

“He’s got to learn from that, but at the same time, I have a lot of confidence in the fact that when he does catch the ball and gets going, he has actually got a chance to score. When you have a guy like that, he’s going to have as many opportunities as possible to return balls, whether it’s on kickoff or punt return.”

Grant, a rookie, was hard on himself after the game and made no excuses. He spent extra time catching punts after practices this week to sharpen his attention to watch the ball all the way into his hands.

Your thoughts? :ponder:

Kid is electric. He's going to be fine, and I say that bc of his reaction. He did what winners do....he got to work on the problem in a big way immediately. He's a fighter and it's going to pay off for the team if Gase sticks with him.

Since kickoffs and punt returns are his primary responsibility shouldn't he have been
putting in xtra time to begin with and not waiting till his complete collapse of his last game?

Grant was put on notice. He had the kind of game that you get cut for having. If he wasn't just drafted by this staff, he probably would be gone.

Hopefully he gets better, because if you are going to be a return specialist the one thing you have to do above all else is properly secure the football.

I'm a big fan of Gase's individual handling of different players. One player slacks off and/or feels entitled? Bench him. Another player messes up, but takes accountability and works extra hard to correct it? Stand behind him.

That second dropped punt was an absolute monster of a kick. He had to backtrack like 20+ yards. I think maybe just have him returning kickoffs, the one he dropped was into the sun.

But I'm hoping he's involved in the offense especially without Albert and Pouncey.

Grant already proved he is sure-handed. He had one bad day. I bet we will find him a true asset and I'm still very excited to have him fielding punts and kickoffs. Don't look a gift-horse in the mouth. Grant is an excellent addition to this team and a unique weapon.

I'm pretty sure he knows this is it. No more mistakes. Whether that helps him focus, or pressurizes him to the point of more errors is what we'll find out.

I will say this - errors in judgement are one thing and can usually be coached out. But the inability to catch the ball is not usually about coaching or even hard work - it's about coordination and soft hands. I have some faith Grant can work on his judgement, but I don't know if he can ever catch punts reliably. I hope so.

that's definitely the way i interpret his coaching as well

Completely disagree with this statement.
Your not "put on notice" after one bad game.
Especially when you have contributed with one punt return for a TD and another one for a TD called back and several other good punt and kick-off returns.
I don't care who drafted you.
Now if this continued through the rest of the year and maybe into next year....
But he has too much talent and explosiveness to be "put on notice" after one bad game.

The kick he fumbled was an extremely hard kick to catch.

Grant I'd assume has small hands because of his size, so some mess ups are expected. We won't give up on him anytime soon because he's too good. but he needs to get it under control or eventually he will lose his spot on this team.

Small hands is an issue when catching a football no matter what anyone says.
