PBP-Live Blog — August 6 Training Camp, Morning Practice

From the sound of it, looks like Beck has possibly extended his good work into a 3rd day and 4th practice. McCown continues to struggle, and it looks like Henne had a bit of a hiccup.

Jayson Foster looking good as a return man.

I would hate to ditch the guy (McCown) that has spent all of camps with us learning the offense and getting chemistry with the team and all. He probably needs to stop regressing, though.

I think the reality of last week is that when Beck was obviously struggling, the fact that McCown couldn't pull away from him very much was seen as a negative. When they brought Quincy Carter in for a workout everyone took that as a message to John Beck and I thought that was misguided. John Beck isn't about to get cut a week into training camp. He's not an established veteran, he's a 2nd round pick learning his trade in his second training camp as a pro. These guys aren't idiots. Really, I kind of took it as a shot across McCown's bow. The message was: Beck is struggling, Henne is just a rookie, don't assume that you're going to get the starting QB job just by default with the performances Josh had been stringing together through that first week (which were not impressive by any means).

A certain poster I know talks to a certain member of the media a lot that keeps up on Dolphins day to day, speaks with people high up, but isn't a part of the hit squad of daily bloggers...and that guy has told him that in conversations with Parcells, the Tuna outlined a definitive three year plan for 2010. And, they want John Beck to be the guy for right now. They know what Josh McCown is, he's their Sage Rosenfels. They don't want Henne to start as a rookie, and to suffer through the growing pains that would entail. They want Beck to be the guy now and Henne to either be the guy of the future, or trade bait down the road.

Good stuff right there.
Thanks for the info.

That sounds like a realistic, and smart plan to me....

:hi5:

Real nice catch from Davone Bess from McCown for a touchdown, over Joey Thomas.
Are we past whether or not this guy is going to make the roster yet? At this point, I'd say he's jockeying for position on the depth chart.

This is kind of what I've imagined the scenario to be. Despite Parcells starting Bledsoe his rookie year, I've kind of got the feeling that the Dolphins would be more opposed to doing so, especially with what happened to Beck last year. I heard Parcells liked Beck going into last year's draft, so I know there is some sort of faith there. I really think that they want Beck to be the guy for now, but after some of his practices last week it was becoming harder to justify. Now that he seems to be turning things around a bit, if he shows any kind of a decent performance in the preseason I think he can be the guy.

No it ISN'T

Agreed. Consistency is not three days. Three days does not make a training camp, a spot on the depth chart, or a roster position. Three days does not make a career.

Unfortunately, far too many people seemed to forget that, last week...

Interesting read, CK. I can see the logic behind that, and it matches up well with things I've said.

Reports have shown steady progress by Beck. This is good news. Henne is doing pretty well overall, but I don't think they'll want to throw him out, as you mention. And McCown, I've always felt, was an insurance policy.

Obviously, things can change, depending on the situation. But, that's how I see it. I've felt the real battle for QB will be Beck and Henne NEXT year.

Totally with you on this point. The more the QB debate goes on, the more I believe that this battle is going to go late into TC.. meaning perhaps after the 3rd preseason game. we all know practices are one thing, but we need to see these guys in game situations. Can you imagine the judgements that will be made after the Tampa game this weekend!:sidelol:

Bess looks like the steal of the draft so far. I have watched most of his games as a warrior and I believe he will be something special. About time we got a good player out of the undrafted class. We need breaks like this to return to power. Nice to see WAC players doing good.

Boy if McCown and Beck look like crap against the Tampa first teams . . . and Henne lights up the 3rd stringers . . . . watch out.

Hell Beck lit up the 3rd stringers last year, and he would have gotten more praise for starting if it wasn't for Green being here.
