Joe Schad — I am obsessed with Ryan Tannehill’s ability and occassional apprehension to run.I admit it. I ask about it often.

I once told Tannehill he averages more yards per rush than Jim Brown.

He half-smiled. Said something about how the run can add another dimension. But it’s clear that Tannehill – who was a dynamic wide receiver at Texas A&M (this should not be a sore spot, he is an excellent athlete and no apologies should be needed) – prefers to stay in the pocket when possible.

But, oh, the shots he’s taken throughout his career. The vicious shots.

Which is why The Daily Dolphin has shouted (OK, mumbled under its breath in the Hard Rock press box) more than once, “Run, Ryan! Run, Ryan!” as a pocket quickly collapsed or a third-down scramble for the sideline and the sticks seems oh-so-obviously obtainable from the eye in the sky.

And its why we were thrilled that Dolphins’ offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen took a series of questions about this from the obsessed Daily Dolphin and, shall we say, ran with it.

Christensen provided one answer so long it didn’t fit on the page on my laptop screen! It’s clear Christensen would like to see Tannehill use his legs more — and was similarly thrilled Tannehill has begun to do it more.

Daily Dolphin: “I noticed in the Bills game, Ryan Tannehill ran for a first down.”

Christensen: “Yes.”

Daily Dolphin: “You’ve told Tannehill to do that, to run for first downs.”

Christensen: “We’ve certainly told him that teams that convert third downs in this league are teams where the quarterback runs for one or two a game. That’s a fact.”

Only took 5 YEARS for the Dolphins to reach these conclusions...Outstanding! Your thoughts? :ponder:

For some reason, RT seems to play better when he runs the ball a few times a game. Maybe he needs to taste a bit of his blood in his mouth or take a hit or two before he can get it going.

Let's hope he runs for a couple first downs today then. He's fun to watch when he's out of the pocket. Throwing or running.

Not sure if this is a product of my imagination, but didnt Philbin coach Tannehill to not take off and hang in there as a pure pocket passer?

I was actually thinking about this subject last night while watching yet another Ohio state buckeyes game. Jt Barrett is a god damn master in the pocket. Seriously, watch the way he moves around in there, dodging, stepping up, hopping back, always looking foward, always knowing when to run, when to throw, and when to throw it away. Every time I watch jt Barrett make a masterful escape I think about how rt has the same ability to run that Barrett does. Barrett might be a little stronger in his running, but both have speed, both are agile, and both are accurate throwers on the run and on short to intermediate range throws. Not sure what my point is, other than if rt could learn to do what a college qb can in jt Barrett, he'll be a damn superstar in the NFL. Let me add that I don't think Barrett has nearly the arm tannehill does. He's not a great passer yet, but he's got the pocket awareness I want out of tannehill.

I'm thrilled to see the coaches emphasizing this. D's shouldn't be able to play man coverage without spying Tannehill, and if they're forced to do that, it allows Miami to dictate more on offense.

After the Tennessee game when we were all justifiably starting to write off this season and the question was asked about drafting a qb next year I brought up JT as an example of a college qb who could probably run Gase's offense for just this reason. Dude has pocket awareness like few others I've seen at the college level.

It was mentioned that his arm is average at best. I want a better QB when the time comes.
