It's Only Happened ONCE!
Here is what Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday:
• Ndamukong Suh played outside his natural position four or five times last week. He likes to move him to end about twice a game. Suh is very, very bright. He understands the game. He does things right. He’s engaged every day. He’s a consummate pro.
• We played Baltimore twice in four years at Cincinnati. Joe Flacco is a special quarterback. In the same category as Peyton Manning or Philip Rivers. It’s an explosive group. Flacco has one of the best arms in the league. They’ve got four guys that can run.
• Xavien Howard is not quite ready yet. Maybe in a week or two. It will be a challenge to figure out how to use him and Byron Maxwell and Tony Lippett at the same time. Howard and Lippett really haven’t played slot. Howard isn’t healthy enough to discuss the rotation yet, but they might be able to rotate by series.
• Bobby McCain has been solid. McCain missed one tackle that led to a big play. He also made two or three big plays. Slot is a tough position. It’s a hard job. He hasn’t coached a perfect nickel.
• With McCain and Lippett’s playing experience increasing and Byron Maxwell gaining playing experience in the system, the pass defense has improved. Lippett is playing really well.
• The defense has been inconsistent. That’s how Joseph would label it. The front four and Kiko have to play well to win. That’s where it starts.
• The pass rush plan against San Francisco was bad and didn’t work. Joseph takes the blame for it. The quarterback run created real problems. Once the rush plan failed, Joseph said he was scrambled to find a play for tight coverage and to cover the quarterback. The zone read is like playing Navy in college. All of the sudden it’s on you. Guys being cut in the back side.
