Before the season, Sports Illustrated revealed its ranking of the 32 NFL backup quarterbacks.
Matt Moore was 23rd.

Absolutely ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculously underrated.

Matt Moore can win. Matt Moore is poised, confident and more-than-competent.

Matt Moore is much, much better than the average backup.

Among the quarterbacks ranked ahead of Moore: Kellen Clemens, Chad Henne, Derek Anderson and Geno Smith.

Kellen Clemens! Geno Smith!

Would you rather have one of those quarterbacks starting on Sunday at Pittsburgh, in the Dolphins’ second playoff since January 13, 2002?

“I told Matt since my rookie year, I told him he was my favorite player,” Dolphins offfensive tackle Ja’Wuan James said this week. “The way he operates, the way he goes about himself when he wasn’t even a starter. Now he has a chance to start. To see the work he’s put in for years? It’s sad to see a teammate (Ryan Tannehill) go down but with how (Moore) was prepared and ready to go, I feel like he’s been no dropoff.”

The Dolphins players, publicly and privately, say they believe in Moore. They believe they have a legitimate chance to win on Sunday.

How confident are the Raiders with Connor Cook (or even if they had had legendary Matt McGloin?)

Technically, Brock Osweiler of the Texans is a backup but he lost his job to Tom Savage who is injured. Would you rather have Osweiler, Savage or Moore starting for the Dolphins on Sunday?
I’d take my chances with Moore.

Yet, USA Today ranked Moore as the 11th-best starting quarterback (there are only 12) in these NFL Playoffs, ahead of Cook, and behind luminaries like Osweiler.

In an effort to see if my eyes lied, I put together a spread sheet of the 32 backup quarterbacks Sports Illustrated ranked in the preseason. And it turned out Moore’s numbers are impressive:

• Among the NFL backups with more than 200 career pass attempts, Moore ranks sixth with a passer rating of 82.0, behind only Matt Schaub, Colin Kaepernick, Nick Foles, Shaun Hill, Brian Hoyer and Mike Glennon.

• Among the NFL backups with more than 200 career passing attemps, Moore ranks fifth with a yards/per attempt of 7.1, behind only Schaub, Kaepernick, Foles and Hoyer.

Moore has been in the NFL for 10 seasons and this will be his first playoff start. But he will benefit from having started three games down the stretch for the Dolphins.

And if you were to look at what Moore has accomplished in his last 12 NFL starts, it might surprise many NFL observers, reporters, fans and coaches around the league.

• In Moore’s three starts in 2016 and last nine starts in 2011, Moore has completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 2,465 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

• Moore’s passer rating in those 12 games is 96.9, which would place him eighth in the NFL in passer rating in 2016, behind Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Sam Bradford and Kirk Cousins.

This is not your average backup.

All of that means nothing this week. The team must come out fired up and ready to play. Get on top of the Stealers and choke them out.

I've always believed in Moore, thats why I always said there is no need to rush Tannehill back. When you have a backup of Moore's caliber you can breathe easy and let him take over when its time to take over.

Underrated in the sense that hes a top shelf backup

Overrated in the sense that hed be a quality week in week out starter over the course of 16 games

Moore and Co. could beat Pittsburgh tomorrow and we would still get no mainstream media love. Who cares, we are the Phins and I kinda like having that chip on our shoulder.

I'm excited to see what he does, but Ajayi needs to get 25 carries. I'm super disappointed our true future qb wont be getting any playoff experience this week.

Moore has everything you could ever want in a quality backup . . . . when your franchise QB is already in place.

When you have a young franchise QB, there really is no reason to develop upside directly behind him. Certainly keep a 3rd string QB or a PS QB, young, with upside . . . but the key ingredient in a backup QB is to have a guy who prepares well, who isn't scared of the moment and who isn't scared to let it fly, without making costly mistakes.

There is a perception that Matt Moore is a turnover machine . . . he struggled in 2011 when we had bookends of Colombo and Jerry protecting him and caused 5 forced fumbles, but his TD:INT ratio over his last 12 games is on the verge of 3 to 1. That is not the definition of a turnover machine at all when it comes to passing the football.

My argument for Matt Moore in previous seasons was I felt he'd improvise the pocket better than Tannehill at the time and honestly, I just wanted to win some damn games and felt Matt Moore would at least let it sling and we wouldn't settle for all of the underneath stuff. I never ever felt that he should be Ryan Tannehill's replacement . . . . but Matt has a certain edge that I definitely would love to see Ryan feed off of and add to his game.

It's a perfect situation. And Miami is not trading him if he lead the way to a Super Bowl and he wouldn't command a high enough draft pick because of his limited upside and age. And that is fine by me, because in the NFL where teams only carry 2 QBs and teams are passing more than ever, you need to make sure you have a darn good backup QB on your roster and we are fortunate enough to have one.

You want a guy who can keep the offense moving when the starter is out and Moore does that very nicely. With Moore, you don't have to cut the playbook in half and he can move the offense. He will make occasional mistakes and occasional big plays and the offense will keep moving. He is the perfect back up to Tannehill.

I hope they keep Moore for the next few years. He is an excellent team player, has good chemistry with RT and gives us a chance to win when he plays.

I am too

Playoff experience is a big deal

Plus that kids earned it going thru what he has in 5 years...its not a coincidence that things flipped for us once we finally found competence for that qb and for this team

The good thing is everything looks very much sustainable...we far exceeded the norm winning close games this year but a couple much needed add ons mainly on d and another year in this offenses system and miami should be a year in year out playoff contender

We are on the cusp

And while i will be bummed with a loss of any kind tomorrow and probably a little moody as a result thats something we all need to remember

Which for me will likely sink in the day after the game once i sober up

The good thing is we've only beat 1 team this season with a winning record and that was the Steelers

we are I think 9-0 when we rush for 80+ yards.
