It's Only Happened ONCE!
Before the season, Sports Illustrated revealed its ranking of the 32 NFL backup quarterbacks.
Matt Moore was 23rd.
Absolutely ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculously underrated.
Matt Moore can win. Matt Moore is poised, confident and more-than-competent.
Matt Moore is much, much better than the average backup.
Among the quarterbacks ranked ahead of Moore: Kellen Clemens, Chad Henne, Derek Anderson and Geno Smith.
Kellen Clemens! Geno Smith!
Would you rather have one of those quarterbacks starting on Sunday at Pittsburgh, in the Dolphins’ second playoff since January 13, 2002?
“I told Matt since my rookie year, I told him he was my favorite player,” Dolphins offfensive tackle Ja’Wuan James said this week. “The way he operates, the way he goes about himself when he wasn’t even a starter. Now he has a chance to start. To see the work he’s put in for years? It’s sad to see a teammate (Ryan Tannehill) go down but with how (Moore) was prepared and ready to go, I feel like he’s been no dropoff.”
The Dolphins players, publicly and privately, say they believe in Moore. They believe they have a legitimate chance to win on Sunday.
How confident are the Raiders with Connor Cook (or even if they had had legendary Matt McGloin?)
Technically, Brock Osweiler of the Texans is a backup but he lost his job to Tom Savage who is injured. Would you rather have Osweiler, Savage or Moore starting for the Dolphins on Sunday?
I’d take my chances with Moore.
Yet, USA Today ranked Moore as the 11th-best starting quarterback (there are only 12) in these NFL Playoffs, ahead of Cook, and behind luminaries like Osweiler.
In an effort to see if my eyes lied, I put together a spread sheet of the 32 backup quarterbacks Sports Illustrated ranked in the preseason. And it turned out Moore’s numbers are impressive:
• Among the NFL backups with more than 200 career pass attempts, Moore ranks sixth with a passer rating of 82.0, behind only Matt Schaub, Colin Kaepernick, Nick Foles, Shaun Hill, Brian Hoyer and Mike Glennon.
• Among the NFL backups with more than 200 career passing attemps, Moore ranks fifth with a yards/per attempt of 7.1, behind only Schaub, Kaepernick, Foles and Hoyer.
Moore has been in the NFL for 10 seasons and this will be his first playoff start. But he will benefit from having started three games down the stretch for the Dolphins.
And if you were to look at what Moore has accomplished in his last 12 NFL starts, it might surprise many NFL observers, reporters, fans and coaches around the league.
• In Moore’s three starts in 2016 and last nine starts in 2011, Moore has completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 2,465 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
• Moore’s passer rating in those 12 games is 96.9, which would place him eighth in the NFL in passer rating in 2016, behind Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Sam Bradford and Kirk Cousins.
This is not your average backup.
