Okay,

There I was last week, taking a bubble bath (Hey, lots of full grown men take bubble baths...right?), and doing what any normal full-grown man does while taking a bubble-bath, playing solitaire on my PDA.
Well, my one year old thought it was interesting what I was doing, so she walks (Actually still more like stumbles) to the tub and of course, inadvertently, bumps my clie (PDA) into the sudsy water. That thing had already been through the ringer, but this was the last straw.
So, I am now in the market for a new PDA and need insight.
I use the organize quite a bit
I would like to be able to do Powerpoint in it to some extent (Engineers presentation tool of choice)
Windows OS would be nice.
Internet might be something I would entertain. I currently have it on my phone, but that is kindve a nuicance (SP:confused: )

Of course I went to wear all great insight comes from-Finheaven...

Please advise,

Kenny

well i just got a blackberry pearl I love it but I don't think you can do powerpoint on it.

I almost started the way of a blackberry, but I really want more of just an organizer with ability to work from home. Of course I have a lap-top, but it was nice to have my Clie to organize etc. I didnt care for the Sony interface and OS very much though. Seems like there are some nice Pocket PC's out?

i have the T-Mobile MDA, love it and it does have Powerpoint on it. If you are going straight PDA then a Windows OS is a must as you want Powerpoint and it comes installed.

Would I have to use T-Mobile in order to have this. I used to, and got really tired of being out of service. I have since switched to Cingular and am enjoying life. T-Mobile is probably pretty good where you are, but for pretty much the entire Southwest and the entire western 1/2 of Texas, it isnt so good.
Is the MDA like a Blackberry?

Cingular's version is the Cingular 8125.

Lucky for you I work for Verizon Wireless so maybe I can lend a little insight regarding the biggest complaints I hear regarding phones without being prejudicial (easier since I make nothing off this lol)

The lowdown I can give you on VZW's PDA's is as follows (there are others but these are the ones I like the best and which customers seem most happy with (i.e. fewest returns/least complaining):
- Palm Treo WX. - As opposed to its little brother the Treo W this one has double the internal memory and crashes much much less because the extra memory allows it to support more tasks which is what usually causes these things to crash in the first place. The really nice thing about the the WX is that you can view, edit or create word, PP, Excel documents and sync with outlook. Its one of the very few with full capability and in that respect its a lot like having a laptop and it coolly supports windows media player. I sell a lot of these to students and business professionals.
Other features: Bluetooth capability (supports OBEX which VZW usually blocks), Expandable memory card slot, voice dialing, and about 1000 other features most people never get around to using. 1.3 megapixel camera.
Downside: Still windows so it will crash occassionally. Its VZW so its not cheap. Cant download more ringtones on it yet.

Voice quality is pretty good but most PDA's are at least a slight step down from the quality of the service provider, in this case its not really significant.

Blackberry 8703: The best email device of any PDA, no question. I call it the Crackberry cause you get addicted as I did to mine. I love the push email system that allows you to use up to 10 different email addresses and still have the phone alert you that you have a new email every 9 or 15 minutes. Another nice feature of the blackberry is that with other smartphones the computer youre syncing to has to be left on if you wish to retrieve emails but with blackberry because RIM uses its own software and servers you can save a few bucks on the electric. With the 8703 you can also teather to a laptop and get unlimited broadband speed for 15 dollars a month. The treo 700P (palm software as opposed to windows) does this as well for VZW.
Downside: Can view attachments, cant edit or create word/excel/PP. Thats really the only bad thing I can say. No memory card slot or camera.

Audiovox6700/PocketPC (I think its the 8125 on cingular). Every major carrier has a variation of this phone. I dont know as much about the ones on other networks as I know about this VZW version referred to as the PPC or 6700 but I do know you do have the full functionality of editing, creating, or viewing anything with microsoft office. It supports WI-Fi which actually isnt as good as it seems since the web pages or phone dont tell you when youre not in a wi-fi hot spot and you get slammed .15 cents a kilobyte not knowing that many webpages are between 1k-3k KB's per click. The bills get ugly real fast. It has a cool keyboard which slides out and makes typing easier if you prefer that over the stylus. Supports BT and extra memory as well. 1.3 megapixel camera.
Downside: Size. This thing is easily mistaken for a brick. Its huge.

Regardless of which service you choose or phone you choose I reccommend doing some research on:

And of course Ill answer whatever questions i can for you bro

That is why you have a data plan and then I can surf as much as I want, on WI-FI and on the GPRS connection. Also with BT I can link it to my laptop so I have internet where there isn't anyvia Wi Fi.

One thing I like about the Cingular/ T-Mobile is that they are on a GSM platform with SIM card, so I unlocked mine using a hack from xdadevelopers and now can use it wereever I go in Europe or the Caymans, just buy a local SIM card and off I go.

Oh of course you get a data plan. I just laugh at the dumb turds that dont want to take my word about getting the data plan. theyre back within a month complaining about their bill. :rolleyes2
I dont particularly care for the sim chip because I rarely go out of the country so I just get a throwaway phone for the same $20 you spend for a sim chip. But thats just me.

Thanks for the insight, but at this point I would really rather keep my phone and PDA as two seperate entities. Is that still possible? I really dont need a PDA that I can call out on, or get the internet on....or do I?
I know, time to get my 8-tracks and Betamax out....

don't forget the reel to reel...:D

I did the seperate PDA phone for a long time. Tried many different PDAs. Hands down for what you are saying the Dell Axim is the best. It is a little bulkier, but it is like have a mini laptop. With a portable kepboard and wirelss card it allowed me to rarely even bring the laptop. It was durable, big easy screen to read, etc.

That's my choice.

I got the Dell Axim when it first came out and have re flashed my ROM a couple times to update it. Still a great little device. if you are going PDA and not Phone PDA then that certainly is a good option.

Check HP they have PDAs too. BUt I tell ya, I love having PDA/ Phone combo. It just makes more sense as I have obe less thing to lose! LOL
