read several articles in the early off season about how many OL penalties we had. Just read an article it is still a problem. Mostly Tunsil. 3 penalties in three plays.
    How do you fix that?

No pad's. Quinn more than likely got him on a hair trigger, at some point he going to have to smack Quinn in the chops....get some respect...

    Top three:

Tunsil 12 total with 8 false starts and 9 total pre-snap penalties. This has to get cleaned up. No excuse.

    Godchaux 9 total with 6 pre-snap

Howard 8 total with 5 pass interference

More than anything else, penalties have killed this team the past 2 or 3 seasons. We can't get out of our own way. If we can just be in the middle of the pack in penalties, we'll have a pretty damn solid season.

Completely agree Superself. Each of these is unacceptable.

Howard has done pretty well since he came into the league with the PI, since his style and the expectation of press man corners is that they will struggle with that. But last year he had problems. The good news was that the light sorta came on for him in the latter half of the season and he really started to play well. Many of those PI calls are judgement calls by the refs. When you're a good CB like Richard Sherman, they simply don't call it. If you notice Howard's play towards the end of the year, he was playing lights-out, and the refs let some of that go. He could have easily been called for more PI during that stretch, but the refs gave him the benefit of the doubt because his general level of play was quite good. I like to think that a combo of experience and less strict ref treatment bode well for Howard's PI numbers decreasing. It's little more than a hunch on my part, but that's what I'm expecting.

Godchaux, well this is a different thing. He was consistently single-teamed, and he still needed to gamble on snap-count (as did Suh) which leads to the opposing offense being able to get you offsides whenever they want … and that's not a good thing. Likewise, it's an indication that he's not particularly quick for a DL, and given he's not a huge fire hydrant type, he needs to be quick. Not sure how he is going to reduce those pre-snap penalties without simply letting the single OL dominate him. He's young and learning though, so there's hope.

Tunsil is a bit of an enigma. This guy has super-quick feet and doesn't need to get pre-snap penalties because he's scared of speed rushers. Physically, he's got it. This is a gap between potential--which is through the roof, and production--which is below average. I'm hoping he starts to work harder and having Josh Sitton next to him helps him concentrate more on his craft without worrying about helping inside. I always thought he would have benefitted from having Branden Albert for one more year to keep him on the right path as a professional, but Tunsil is going to have to find that inside himself now. I _hope_ he puts in the work instead of arrogantly assuming that he's naturally good enough without the work, and then getting scared during games when he faces ultra-quick DE's. Those penalties are drive killers. If Tunsil wants a shot at the Hall of Fame, he needs to fix those penalties ASAP. That's not the reputation you want to make a lasting impression.

This is a coaching issue, something Shula teams won with over more talented teams. Meaning Gase needs to clean up asap or hit the road.

Ironically the only thing Philbin can take any credit for is that we were consistently in the top five in fewest penalties during his reign.

We had way too many penalties last year, on both sides of the ball. Way too many were mental errors or lack of discipline. Probably my biggest concern with Gase at this point is that he has not cleaned that up.

it's just an extension of overall poor OL play for the past few years. Good thing we addressed this in the draft...oh wait...

Just my opinion but I believe pre snap penalties are a lack of preparation. It all starts with the coaching in order eliminate.

You can’t blame the coaches for a grown man jumping early.

There’s nothing a coach can do to help that...

I don't mind the penalties on X all that much. That's going to happen some in press man. Better a 5 yard defensive holding than a 50-yard bomb against him.

Also, a couple of those penalties on Godchaux were nonsense. I have *never* seen holding called on a DT like a couple of those were called against him.

Gonna disagree. A coach can certainly help with focus and what to key on when getting off the ball.

Tunsil has to learn to hold his water. He knows the damn snap count, wait for it! He's has to trust his abilities and realize that he doesn't need an edge. The whole line will be much better without Pouncey. I fully expect some growing pains as the line gels. It will get better and better through repetition. The team has the entire Summer to get ready for the Titans. If Tunsil is still jumping off sides on opening day I won't be very happy. I think he's better than that and I think playing next to Sitton can only help get him on the right path for NFL stardom.
