Dolphins players came up with a solution to their penalty woes through the first four games of the season: running sprints for entire units in which a player commits a penalty from lack of concentration or not thinking, such as for a false start, offsides or taunting.

The team captains came up with the punishment after a meeting with coach Nick Saban this week. Saban has not wanted to discipline players for mistakes, preferring that they take care of the problems themselves. Saban, however, did take backup center Alonzo Ephraim and tight end Randy McMichael to task for their personal foul and taunting penalties, respectively.

I can't read the article, but anything is a step in the right direction. I think getting the players to know that there will be some consequences for the penalties should help some...I hope.

im not a member... :(

so did this just start after this week? or is this the way it had been for a few weeks now?

after last weeks game, they should be running all day long. do you think that would take away from their normal practice?

had to come up with something, because it's just out of hand,'' defensive end Kevin Carter said, referring to the 52 penalties the Dolphins have been called for through four games. That included a team-record 18 on Sunday at Buffalo.

''You kind of could expect that was coming,'' David Bowens said. ``We're just killing ourselves, so we have to do something to make us think about it and stop it. We're all professionals and making money, so fines aren't going to do any good.''

The defense, which committed nine of the 18 penalties Sunday, didn't actually complete the gassers Wednesday.

There were so many to run, they will be spread out over several days.

''Today was just a taste,'' Bowens said.

And how did it taste?

''Not good,''

I can almost bet the farm that Hadnotand the other OL will be a lil more careful now.

I hope this works... just not sold on this being a good way to punish professionals. I think this was Jimmy Johnson's way... all it seemed to lead to was "dead legs" or tired players.

Joe Rose had another interesting idea this morning on the radio... he thought to make a "big board" with the running totals of "stupid penalties" so the players have to see it every day and that way they see just how bad some players have been. Thus making pride come into play.

Wow, Hadnot's riding his bike to practice from home. What a big guy to be doing cardio, lol.

I don't remember many penalties in Dallas or Miami under JJ either. Or napping for that matter.

Fine them

Nah, pocket book means nothing to them.......its about pride and peer reveiw.

Gassers will help, but having teammates that wont let you forget, that ride you to improvement, and most importantly pick you up and congratualte you when you do it right always goes further.

The difference is you need to have clear leaders that can take control that can be respected themselves before they are listened to.

I watched something in Dolphin Insider that says a lot as well. Hadnot was being interviewed an he mentioned how this team was different than past ones. He stated "guys really are excited to be here, we hangout together after practice and games, we are a team"

If so, than Gassers picked as punishment by your teammates will go a long way compared to $$$$ in fines.
