DAVIE — Miami Dolphins tight end Dion Sims already has a career-high in catches and touchdowns and after the season, he’ll be a free agent.
“I’ve love to stay around,” Sims said Friday. “Yeah, for sure. I mean, South Florida, being with this group of guys, the success that the team is having, it’s great to be around. I would love to stay.”
The Dolphins locked up second-string tight end MarQuies Gray to a new two-year deal this week. Sims wasn’t sure where his agent’s conversations stand with the club, but in general he’s excited about whatever comes from his second NFL deal.
Sims has 26 catches for 256 yards and four touchdowns. He also has three touchdowns in the last three games.
“I think it went pretty well,” Sims said. “I’ve taken advantage of all my opportunities and just continue to get better. I took a step forward from last year and made progress.”
Sims, 6-feet-4, 271 pounds, took over as a starter after Jordan Cameron was shut down for the season with a concussion. Sims has been a dominant run blocker at times in the NFL, but has now improved his overall game.
“I’m just getting better every year, from a technique standpoint from just knowing what to do out there, being in the right spots,” Sims said. “You know running routes, using my hands, pass pro, run blocking. Every area I’ve improved since day one.”
Sims’ play has impressed quarterback Matt Moore.
“I think just all around, he’s gotten better,” Moore said. “He was put into some positions (against the Jets) obviously, where he could make some plays; and that was good. But the guy is a grinder. He works, so it is no surprise that he’s only getting better and is going to get better.”
Dolphins coach Adam Gase says Sims has met expectations. Gase wasn’t with the franchise when Sims was a fourth-round pick out of Michigan State in 2013.
“He has done a really good job run blocking,” Gase said. “He does a really good job (in) pass protection. He has really excelled in the passing game, because I think it’s opportunity. He has gotten some opportunity. He hasn’t been used as just a blocker.”
Sims knows tight ends can flourish in Gase’s offense.

Have always liked Sims. Get the deal done
 
we made a mistake in letting a good blocking/catching te go in fasano, let's correct a mistake like that and spend some money on our own for a change.
 
I'm glad Sims stats aren't too blown up because that'll save a lot of money in FA. His in-line blocking is second to none for a TE. I've seen him block guys one on one that a lot of NFL tackles would have trouble with. He is valuable as a receiver too, just doesn't get a lot of opportunities because he is so valuable as an extra blocker. He's pretty good at creating RAC when he does get it in the open field.
 
This is a no brainer. He won't be expensive, seems like he is liked in the locker room, and is a solid player. Give him 3 more years here.
 
I hope we are able to lock him up at a decent price. He has looked so much better this year. Man coaching really matters!
 
How about 4 years deal around 10-12 mil with 4 mil guarantee?
 
My concern is that he already has at least two concussions (maybe more?).
 
If he can stay away from the head hits, he is going to be awesome the next few years. He's in shape now, he is experienced, he's huge, and he wants to be a Fin.....lock him up!
