Let me first start off by saying that I am very excited by the upcoming season.

However....I think we need to all temper our expectations.

Penningon is very limited as a qb. He is no doubt a very intenelligent qb that can make good decisions, but he has not proven that he can throw a consistent deep pass. Teams realize this and they play up on him-almost conceeding the long ball. Consequentialy, the run game becomes increasingly difficulty.

Personally I am taking a wait and see approach on the Pennington experiment. If he is able to keep the defense honest by connecting with the occasional long pass, and I am praying he can, i think we are in line for a real turn around this year (possible playoff contention!!!!)

I predict that my uneasy feeling will either be validitated or completely disproven very quickly. I know it is only one week, but i think teh fate of the 2008 dolphins will be determined week one against tha J-E-T-S.

I wouldn't say he's very limited as he is very accurate, smart, had good leadership and could still be a pretty good qb. One of his possible limits though, like you said is his deep pass or if he can throw some good deep passes without them floating too long in the air from a lack of arm strength. But then again he has shown more zip in his throws in the preseason than last season and it might be from his change in mechanics helping him use more of his body in throwing the ball, which helps put less stress on his shoulder and from his shoulder healed, as some injuries take 2 years to fully heal. So this worries me too, but I would say he has some limits or possible limits, but not very limited.

A game manager is what the Fins have been crying out for since Marino and thats what Pennington will do.

Dont worry about the deep ball, completing the short ones keeps the offense on the field

He's going to be the best game manager and [short] passer this team has had since Marino. Sure, it'd be even better if he could throw the long ball with some zip, but a few months ago I remember wishing for Jay Feidler, so I'm pretty stoked.

And hell, let teams put 8 in the box to stop our beastly running game. What are they gonna do when they're still getting mauled by our O-line and run over by the R&R express? Put 11 in the box?

honestly, this thing about the long ball, blah, blah... how many times a game do teams throw a 50+ yard pass? the intermediate routes are far more effective, and if completed with any consistency, are enough to keep defenses from cheating up.

through two preseason games, I have seen pennington throw 15+ yard passes to ginn and hagan and they seemed to have plenty of speed on it.

Chad actually has a somewhat consistent deep ball, his problem is throwing outside the #s. Chad doesn't take alot of chances down the field so it seems like he doesn't have a good deep ball but he does.

He will be a big upgrade over anything we've had in the last 6-7 years, and that alone is something to be excited about.

Man I got just one thing for you...12-4!!!!!

Your lack of belief is a contagious and dangerous disease that must be quarantined asap. You should not have used your very first post in that manner.

Now go build you a new account with a new screen name and start over. Make that post an incredible post that screams dolphins pride. End that post with 12-4!!!!!!!!!

Surtain, I like your style!! I think your predicton is kind of insane, but I admire your fire. GO PHINS!!!! :hi5:

We all have the right to be skeptical. IMO, Pennington will be a very good stopgap until Henne is ready to go. I dont expect 30 points a game, but i do expect 20-24/game.

I'm with you, my man! I think we'll be .500 at the worst.
Thanx for your service. I salute you:hi5:

I am more worried about Pennington staying healthy than his arm. But really can't that be said for all qbs. You never know if the injury bugaboo is around the corner. Pennington has had more than his share. His build doesn't appear to be stong enough for a full season of nfl play. Maybe somewhat like mark bulger of the rams.

Not a bad first thread and post. I agree that our enthusiasm shoud be tempered. I agree Pennington has, limitations. However, I don't think because Pennington can't throw the ball deep like Randall Cunningham we are limited in what we can do.

Chad does not have the strongest arm in the league, but he's also been in NY where they haven't exactly had the best coaches on the planet. Lets not forget that. Jet Fans want it to be all about Chad and his arm. Well there is such a thing as a game plan. We don't know exactly what the Jet coaches were thinking, but you can have success with a QB that doesn't have a strongest arm.

For exapmle, the Offense is just one aspect of the game. You still have special teams and Defense. Use the other aspects of your team to help another part they may lack something. If you have a QB who doesn't have a strong arm, work on your ST unit and make them stonger, the idea is shorten the field therefore you lesten the need to throw the ball deep cause you've created field position. Make you defense stronger, use that unit to put more points on the board. By doing you you can become a more ball controled offense and you won't need to throw the ball deep.

There are many ways to create an advantage from a disadvantage. One weakness is not a reason to believe you're limited in what you can do, you just have to use the other aspects of your game. Also by doing this you become a much tougher team to beat. As for the running game, I believe you can be a running team without having a passing thrat and be very successful doing so. We are blessed with some serious talent in the backfield, we can make them our strength and use Penningtons short to medium passing game as a compliment to the running game. We also need the WR's to be YAC receivers, Like Steve Smith and Marvin Harrison. It's been a while since Miami has had that.

I read the article about Pennington going back to his original personal trainer to rejuvenate his body, but I took it as BS. Now that I saw him scramble during the last two games, I am wondering if there is something to it. I am planning on reviewing some old Jets game from the last two seasons. Maybe nyjunc can provide some context on his scrambling over the last two years. If it is proven out that he scrambles better after the training, then maybe he can put a little more zip on those out patterns. Also, maybe he can make it through the season healthy.
