Pennington takes the lead

Former Jets QB impresses young offense with his dedication to improvement

By Harvey Fialkov |South Florida Sun-Sentinel August 19, 2008 DAVIE - Like a teacher keeping his students after school for extra help, Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington held his offense for nearly an hour after team meetings Friday night before the well-balanced victory over the Jaguars.

And no one was looking to ditch class.

"It's weird. Usually we want to get out of meetings and go rest, but it was cool," running back Ronnie Brown said Monday.

"Being here for a week, he was just trying to make sure everybody was on the same page with the same terminology. It was light and beneficial. He showed the dedication he has as a player and leader on this team. You can't coach that; it's something a guy just has." Pennington, who efficiently directed two scoring drives in his three series, regularly holds tutorial sessions with his receivers after practices as well.

Pennington may not be here in a year, but he's one of the most important pieces on rebuilding this team.

I must say. I was completely opposed to Pennington coming here, but he has changed my mind about him; and I was hoping he would. He's only been here 10 days or so and he's vastly improved the QB position more then the 11-12 QBs we've had since Dan. This young offense got exactly what they needed in Pennington; A SMART LEADER. He's the right guy to hold this job down until Henne is ready.

my favorite thing is we never have to play against him again.
I think he beat us 8 out of the last 9 games. Our colors look better on him.

100% Agree, I thought it was going to be a huge mistake bringing him in... I even have a Pennington sux t-shirt from his Jet years (man he used to torment us). I am very impressed with him as a player/leader since his arrival & think he is exactly what this team needed right now....

My favorite part about this is that we didnt give up anything to get him. No wasted draft picks. I mean just think about all those wasted draft picks we gave up for losers. Culpepper, Feely, Green, need I go on?

And another point is he's not coming in here like hes our franchise player and hes still kept his class and his do all he can attitude. He is one of the better people around the NFL and if he can stay healthy he could help us tremendously.

If we have a good running game, look out any team we play. Chad is the man off of the play action pass.

Seeing him play saturday I have to say I was impressed. His command, his confidence, his leadership were all displayed, and most important the other players seemed to pick it up from him. I read an article today that said Penny throws a catchable ball. I have to say that seeing the receivers doing better is an indication of that. To ask a reciever where he wants the ball, to practice with the recievers after practice, stuff like that is what a NFL QB should be doing. If he only had Henne's arm.

As long as Penn is producing, no need to rush Henne. Henne will have plenty of time to develop as a NFL qb. Hopefully he will learn what it takes to be a winner.

I have to admit that I was baffled by the people that didn't want him here, given our situation at QB. He's a leader. Think back to how many 3rd downs he converted against us. It makes me sick to think about the number of times I had that sick feeling in my stomach everytime our D faced a 3rd down in recent years.

Just trying to get that 'me-to-you' factor with my receivers, talk about routes and communicating," Pennington said. "The core values of how you get better never changes; the work ethic, your communication level, that never changes no matter if you're in the NFL or high school."

This part of the article explains to me why Lavernous Coles had a hard-on for Pennington. Tedd Ginn needs to be careful not to get too comfortable with pennington as he is only a short term solution, although I do want him to excell with Pennigton at the helm.
