Chad Pennington threw the ball for the team in the recent OTA that was held last week. Although no media was allowed to watch, all reports had him throwing the ball well. Those reports may have been stretching the truth a bit, as Pennington and others in the organization seem a little more guarded in the optimism that preceded this event. Pennington was at Eric Mangini's camp for kids this weekend and the glowing report on his progress turned very cloudy. I know this story comes from Rich Cimini, the man who loves to "gloom and dome" everything involving the team, but what troubles me is the quotes from Pennington himself.
"I'm just trying not to look too far ahead," said Pennington, "It's like that old Southern saying: 'This isn't my first rodeo.' I know what I'm going through and I know what I'm going to go through in the future. I still have those high goals," he continued. "My optimism is up there, but I'm focused on day-to-day. There's a lot of time left and a lot of work to be done."
This attitude is a far cry from his "I can make every throw in the playbook" quote he made prior to this OTA last week. Even Mangini had an interesting take on Pennington being ready for training camp. Although he didn't give much information at all, he did come out with a "We're going to monitor it." This is the first time it was even questioned whether Pennington would be ready for training camp or not. Not a good sign.
