PENNINGTON WILL GET $4 MILLION IN 2008

Posted by Mike Florio on August 13, 2008, 2:51 p.m.
A league source tells us that Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington will earn $4 million in 2008. He’ll get the money in the form of a $500,000 guaranteed roster bonus, and a $3.5 million base salary.
It’s a $2 million reduction in what he was due to earn from the Jets.
The Dolphins could avoid the salary obligation by releasing Pennington before the start of the regular season, if the team ultimately decides that he won’t make the team any better than it would be with Chad Henne or Josh McCown or John Beck at the helm. At this point, such a move appears unlikely.
We’re also told that reports of a two-year, $11.5 million contract for Pennington were just flat wrong. His two-year deal is worth only (only?) $7.9 million.

thank you very much. sounds like we can release him after this year with no penalty if henne is ready. if henne's not ready we can always keep him 1 more year at a reasonable $3.9 mil but i sure hope henne is ready.

$7.9 mil for a veteran starting qb over 2 years is pretty cheap.

love the fact that we can dump him next camp with no cap consequences.

great news.

That's good news for Miami and is much better than a $11.5 million dollar contract.

good call, even if Henne is ready, Penny would be a valuable backup

so your both assuming beck will be gone then???

b/t john clayton on his latest qb piece posted 2day on espn.com in the short takes section says that penny will start, henne and mccown will battle it out for the backup and that beck will be traded.

he is an nfl insider. just an fyi

I hope Ireland finds a WR gem out there that we can trade him to get.

Sweet move by BP and crew. A good QB for that cheap is welcome anytime. Let them groom Henne for this season (or half season), trade beck for a WR( or draft pick), and draft to bolster receiving corp and secondary next season.

If Henne turns out to be as good as we hope, and we get some good picks in the WR department.. playoffs are basically probable next season.

How much money are we paying McCown?

PER ESPN:

The new Bill Parcells regime signed McCown to a $6.25 million, two-year contract in February. He'll bid to become the 13th starting quarterback for Miami since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season.

I'd much rather have Pennington for $4 mill a year than Mccown at just under that.
