Looking at difference between A Rodgers and A Smith, I believe best thing for rookie QB is to sit not one but cpl of yrs, till

1) you feel he is ready
2)O line is gd enough so that he is not punch druck aka D Carr, A Smith, J Harrington and J Losman.

So considering this I believe we have the best possible scenario.

O Line is getting better and potentially V good, Henne as backup and most of all Pennington the ideal QB for rookie to learn the essentials of being an NFL QB.

To backup up somebody with limited skills who has the smarts to be poss Pro Bowl QB must be a superb learning experience for Henne.

I agree, the only problem is we still have a long way to go. We still need depth on the O-line, a better pass rush, a secondary (outside of Bell and W.Allen), and a WR or two. That may or may not be fixed in one offseason (depending on how much money we throw out in FA). Pennington should done in a few years and by that time this will a good solid team for Henne to take over and show what he's got. Plus, he earns a ton of time in the classroom not only learning how to be a smart football player, but a leader too.

Definatley man, well said. Keeping Henne in development and his confidence protected is huge. Let him shine in pre season. I want him sitting for 4 years. The Quarterback role is 90% mental. He has the confidence to stay in the pocket, and he has a hell of an arm. Problem is there needs to be some fine tuning (as with all players) and he still has potential to put on some size. But most importantly, these next few years are mainly going to be the mental development years for Henne. That stuff comes over time, and there is no sense in rushing him into things. Its a proven formula for success. Romo, Mcnair, Rodgers, etc..etc..

Secondly i want him as far from contact as possible for the next few years. He's still "recovering" from a college injury that affected his draft status.

Thirdly, I say 4 years because thats how much prime football i think Pennington has left in him before he either becomes a backup here or goes to another team. This is all with the notion that there wouldnt be any serious injuries to Penny. God forbid.

totally agree, whenever Henne ready and better then Penny put him in, if not no matter how long it takes let him sit and learn

It seems like for every Carson Palmer or Aaron Rodgers, there is a Ben Reoethlisberger or Matt Ryan. I think there is something to be learned in a "trial by fire" type thing, but in general you are probably right.

Very true...and it very much depends on the team and the person. Flacco and Ryan (as well as Ben) hit the perfect situation for them. It does happen every so often.

If you're an understudy of Chad Pennington, and you see the guy rarely make an error. How can it not be a good thing? I never expected Chad Pennington have anywhere CLOSE to the success he has had with the Dolphins this year, and even more spectacular is some of the plays i've seen him make that signifying smart football. His mobility and his decision making outweigh his "weak arm", which has even looked strong at time this year. He's so efficient. It has to be a good thing for any young QB to be watching him.

The Roethlisberger's and Matt Ryan's are the few among the many. That is why they get mentioned since it is more likely any rookie will struggle albeit those with talent. As far as Alex Smith IMHO he was overrated coming out of college anyway. I prefer the develop your qb in the two year plan versus thrown to the fire. Tuna learned from his Phil Simms experience in NY about not throwing the qb in the fire before they are ready. Although Scott Brunner was not exactly a great model to sit behind and learn from.

no, he's our best STARTING QB in close to 10 years
Pennington will start next season btw, Henne will get beaten out by Pennington..

pennington is under contract until the end of next year... Honestly, i hope we sign him to a 3 year extension, hopefully he'd rather be a backup to Henne by then, rather than a washed up starter for a crappy team...

Pennington does seem to be the perfect quarterback to learn from. He gets it done with less physical talent than most so Henne can hopefully learn from that and apply his superior physical attributes to become an even better quarterback.

I think we've had numerous threads about this: either having a young QB sit and learn or let him outright play. There are arguments for both sides but IMHO it solely depends on the player. If the QB is NFL material, it will show one way or the other. If he isn't, it won't. Simple as that. Doesn't matter if he plays as a rookie or later in his career. Good players prevail.

Henne has a great mentor in Pennington. Chad is smart, very accurate, and most importantly a great leader. One thing ALL great QBs have in common is leadership. Your teammates have to be able to look in your eyes and know that you will do everthing in your power to win the game and this type of leadership is contagious. There have been many times this year that Pennington has put this team on his back and led us to victory. I think Henne is just fine with learning for now and when his time comes I think he will have what it takes.

I say let Henne beat out Penny and only then do you allow him to play. I like the idea of extending Penny's contract a year or two so he is signed through 2010 or even 2011. Regardless of whether Henne beats out Penny next year, or 2 years after that, That will be the time when you know he is ready and I'm fine with having an elite backup. The front office put us in a position that we can spend a little money on accessories like Penny.

people will be changing there tune after next years schedule.
